Finland like Ireland is a neutral state with a small population whose economic and social transformation is felt by its citizens to be thanks to its membership of the European Union. It has re-elected Tarja Halonen as President for the next 6 years. Her re-election ought be of interest to Irish readers, as her candidacy was completely supported by the Finnish Left Alliance party "Vasemmistoliitto" which founded in 1990 campaigns on a political platform of the "new global left" ; a party that promotes the ideals of the French Revolution - liberty, equality, and fraternity - in addition to peace and environmental values and is a member of the "Nordic Green Alliance" in the European parliament. Finland will thus suceed Austria (another neutral) as president of the European Union in July 2006 as a socialist state to take part in the G8 Russia conference on "energy security". ____________________________________________________________________ ... read full story / add a comment

The Fianna Fail selection convention for Galway West was abandoned yesterday. According to the headlines, the reason for the abandonment was the refusal of delegates to accept a head office ruling that only three candidates should be selected. The precise circumstances of the abandonment, as reported in the Irish Times however, indicate that it was not quite that simple. ... read full story / add a comment

The German company BASF Plant Science GmbH (an affilate of the giant transnational chemicals and drugs company BASF) has notified the EPA of its intention to deliberately release GMO potatoes into the environment 9km south of the Hill of Tara, on a 2 Ha plot at Arodstown, Summerhill, Co. Meath. The site is located 2km north of the R156 road between Dunboyne and Summerhill (approx. OS grid reference: N 885 500). If given the go-ahead, this would be the first Irish release of GMO crops since protestors ended Monsanto's GMO beet trials in 1998. The Notification submitted by BASF does not appear to include plans for any environmental impact assessment. Farmers, environmental groups and consumers have expressed total opposition to this unwanted experiment which would terminate Ireland's economically valuable GM-free status. The deadline for related public submissions to the EPA is 5pm on 22 February 2006. ... read full story / add a comment

Gerry McGeough, who campaigned for the fascist. Justin Barett in the European elections, appeared on WBAI's Radio Free Eireann today. RFE is hosted by John McDonagh, the representative of Republican Sinn Fein in New York. McGeough said that informers were not now even getting a rap on the knuckles. He said an appalling vista presented itself. He appealed to RFE not to let people like Niall O'Dowd off the hook. O'Dowd, said McGeogh, is an empty vessel. ... read full story / add a comment

a Brief report on the issues raised at "the Civil Society and Drugs conference" organised by the directorate-general Justice, Freedom and Security of the European Commission which has just closed in Brussels, Belgium. ENCOD (European Coalition for Just and Effective Drug Policies), is a platform of 120 Civil Society Organisations from 24 European countries. ENCODs coordinator, Joep Oomen, says: "By keeping the citizens away from the decision-making forums, they thought they could hide the truth about the war on drugs: that is a costly, failing and counter-productive affair." ... read full story / add a comment

Its been just over a year now since the last ISF so maybe we should have another one this year. There has been lots of activism since then and the movement for global justice [or whatever we are called] has a lot to link up about. On top of that the ESF is back this year, this time in Greece. Is anyone bothered? A crowd of us think that people should get together and talk about it. Here's the proposal: The first ISF Working Groups meeting of 2006 is on Thursday 9th February from 7.30 to 9.00pm NB Change of venue: THE TEACHERS CLUB, PARNELL SQ., DUBLIN 1 . A few Dublin-based activists who worked with the ISF Working Groups for the 2003 and 2004, 1st and 2nd ISFs thought it would be good idea to hold a meeting, talk about the following points (below) and see where we go from there. If you would like to come, please read the WSF Charter Of Principles first and see if you are interested, available at: http://www.forumsocialmundial.org.br/main.php?id_menu=4&cd_language=2 ... read full story / add a comment

At a peace conference in Kuala Lumpur last month, the Kuala Lumpur Global Peace Forum of concerned peoples from all five continents, "outraged over the frequent resort to war", made a declaration to criminalise war. "Killings in war are as criminal as the killings within societies in times of peace," the signatories, including two former Assistant Secretaries General of the United Nations, declare. "Public servants and professionals, in particular in the medical, legal, educational and scientific fields, must promote peace and campaign actively against war," they declare, and this doctor wholeheartedly agrees. Finally, the Forum resolved to establish a permanent Secretariat in Kuala Lumpur to implement the initiativeand to seek the cooperation of NGO's worldwide to achieve its goals. ... read full story / add a comment
