Next year marks the 20th anniversary of the first winter workshop organised by Cooley Environmental and Health Group. Next year's winter workshop is the 20th in a series dating back to the beginning of the Millennium. The workshop is slated for 25 January 2020 at 14:00 in The Strand Hotel, Omeath, Co. Louth. A draft of Cork’s transport plan for the next 20 years includes policies which would decrease the percentage of people who cycle in the “the real capital” from 2.8% in 2016 to 1.3% in 2036. “Hard not to look at this figures and wince,” the Cork Cycling Campaign said on Twitter. New IPCC report on 1.5°C shows the urgency of transformational policy change if we are to avoid dangerous climate change. But Ireland is still lagging behind. The IPCC special report on global warming of 1.5°C is the most important climate science report of the decade. It offers the most exhaustive and authoritative assessment of the impacts of global warming of 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels and the action needed to stay below this threshold. Ireland has become the fourth European country to ban hydraulic fracturing (after France, Bulgaria and Germany). On June 28, the Petroleum and Other Minerals Development (Prohibition of Onshore Hydraulic Fracturing) Bill passed the final legislative stages in the Seanad. The session included the committee, report, and final stages that took place in the Seanad chamber, where the gallery was full of supporters of the ban. This year’s conservation focus is on preventing plastic pollution and marine litter, encouraging solutions for healthier seas. And rightly so. A widely cited study by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation for the World Economic Forum warns that by 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. A separate report in the journal Science estimates that 8 million tonnes of plastic enter the oceans each year – the equivalent of one truckload per minute. An Bord Pleanala have postponed a decision on the Ringakiddy Incinerator Application for a third time. The decision was originally due on 12 July 2016, postponed to 26 October, then to 24 Jan 2017 and has been postponed again with “a proposed decision date not available at this time” according to Bord Pleanala’s website. Cork County Council sets out its land use planning strategy for the development of the towns and villages of the county in a series of Municipal District Local Area Plans, which are currently under review. The Ballincollig-Carrigaline Local Area Plan covers the area surrounding the proposed incinerator site in Ringaskiddy, is directly relevant to the future of the Harbour area and has invited submissions.
