About 500 people joined the protest Wednesday evening in Dublin to protest at the jailing of the Mayo 5. This was very good considering it was called at short notice.
A further protest is to be held in Belmullet 2pm Saturday July 9.

As I type, the indymedia centre on site here is packed to gills as stories are uploaded to the many countries around the world. Sorry no photos today; it was just too damn wet.

What a long day.

The last thing we did before we went to bed last night, was have a barrio meeting at which we sorted ourselves into affinity groups. Affinity groups are small groups of friends who undertake to look after each other on a protest. Each group is divided into buddies - smaller groups of two or three who undertake to always have each other in line of site.
The 'short bus' arrived just after midnigh .Then most tried to get a couple of hours sleep, others waited around the campfire.

At two, the sleepy camp roused itself. It was raining heavily and in the dark it was difficult to see very far. Shouts of 'cat' , 'seomra sproai' and 'red diesel' rang out as the three affinity groups called out to their members. ... read full story / add a comment

In recent years, British Petroleum (BP) has been working hard to remake its public image. Their well-crafted print and television ads feature upbeat electronic music and a vibrant new yellow and green starburst logo. With it’s cutting-edge content on human rights, biodiversity and macro-economic theory, their website is designed to look like that of a developmental think tank.

In reality, BP is the world’s third largest oil and gas company and one of the largest polluters on the globe. Exploration and production of crude oil and natural gas are the company’s main activities and it operates in 100 countries in Europe, North and South America, Asia and Africa. Its revenues for 2003 were over $16 billion; its profits were over $10 billion. ... read full story / add a comment

The Residents Against Racism people knew that the deportation was imminent from early this afternonn. In the early afternoon they were part of an anti-deportation demonstration at the Garda National Immigration Bureau on Burgh Quay. Around 20 Nigerian men were picked up on Sunday night in Blanchardstown. Gardai conducted something of a trawl through pubs in the area as part of the process leading up to the deportation flight. People without ID were picked up in the pubs and their identities checked later. ... read full story / add a comment

Ahern does not feel pressure over aid

The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has said he does not feel under any additional pressure to raise Ireland's level of overseas aid in the wake of the weekend's Live 8 concerts.

Mr Ahern said it was not possible to raise it from €600 million to €1.4 billion as he would not be able to explain such an increase to the Irish people.

Mr Ahern made his comments after a meeting in Dublin with the Canadian Prime Minister, Paul Martin.

The so-called riots in Edinburgh yesterday were hyped out of proportion. It is the tactics of the police to intimidate people from protesting tomorrow at the summit.
