For more than 50 years, the plight of Palestinian refugees has remained at center stage of discussions of Middle East politics. The United Nations has passed dozens of resolutions deploring the status of refugees in that region and Arab representatives continue to insist on the Palestinians' "right of return" as a prerequisite to lasting peace between Arabs and Israelis.

Lost in this discussion, however, has been the memory of another flood of refugees created for the most part at the same time as the original Palestinian refugees left their home. This "forgotten exodus" of Jews from Arab lands involved just as many displaced people, and in some cases resulted in the virtual extinction of historic communities. ... read full story / add a comment

According to former soldier and syndicated journalist Brian Cloughley,
The 3rd Infantry division has gone on a pillaging spree in Baghdad airport taking comfy seats, breaking windows in the terminal, taking what they want and leaving it in a state that "would make the Aegean Stables look like a Tiffany’s window."

In an article in the Daily Times of Pakistan, he compares and contrasts their oafish looting and destruction to Mary's action -which involved no theft. ... read full story / add a comment

There was a hearing today in the High Court to set a trial date for the Catholic Worker 5 as a result of their action at Shannon Airport last February. However as the gardai had not yet completed the preparations for the prosecutions the hearing was adjourned until October with no date set for the trial. Before today's hearing there was a demonstration in support of the group. It started at the Spike and then moved single file to the Four Courts. ... read full story / add a comment

Hi all,

Was at the Dublin bus meeting in Liberty hall last night. There was lots of fighting talk directed towards Seamus Brennan and the government in general. We have a Taoiseach who says he is against privatisation and is pro union, yet every day there seems to be new developments and new legislation from the government that suggests exactly the opposite. ... read full story / add a comment

A report from the Environmental Protection Agency says Ireland will not escape from the impacts of global climate change.

The research predicts that winter rainfall in this country will increase by 10%, but will decrease significantly - by as much as 40% - on parts of the south and east coasts in summer.

The research says sea level rises, coupled with predicted increases in the frequency of extreme weather events, will make low lying areas extremely vulnerable. ... read full story / add a comment
