A sketchy report on the Irish Anti-War Movement website states that a U.S. troop carrier plane was attacked and sabotaged at Shannon airport. Valentine’s Day was marked at Shannon Airport by a vigil calling for Love not War. Around 25 people gathered in the sunshine outside the airport entrance, displaying black hearts and calling for an end to the U.S. military use of Shannon. Report by Grainne V: On December 31st 2009, 18 people gathered together on Scarriff Bridge to remember the over 1,400 Palestinians in Gaza who were killed by the Israeli Army last year and to stand in solidarity with the survivors of that attack, cynically named 'Operation Cast Lead'. We were one of many groups nationwide who met on bridges around the country at the same time as 1,400 internationals attempted to cross into Gaza through the Rafah crossing from Egypt bringing much-needed aid and solidarity. ... read full story / add a comment

The very idea that the future of Shannon Airport should be dependent on American conflict around the world is the latest U turn from the Green Party in Clare, a spokesman for Republican Sinn Fein said today.

Paddy Kenneally from Crusheen, a party spokesman in North Clare said that the latest statement by the Green Party Councillor Brian Meany in relation to the future of Shannon Airport is an insult to all the Irish people who have campaigned against imperialism and American military expansionism.

To say that more American troop carrying planes should transit Shannon Airport and that the Airport should go after this business is an appalling statement to make. ... read full story / add a comment

As another year begins, peace and human rights activists in Ireland’s mid-West continue to oppose the role of Shannon airport in war and torture. The first events of the year will include a Peace Camp commemoration on Jan 6th, followed by the regular monthly vigil on Jan 11th. Pat Breen, Fine Gael TD from Bunratty, showed that he's been listening to the lies about natural resources, and he believes them, when he spoke about Corrib in the Dáil.

The sad thing is that his acceptance of the nonsense peddled by Shell and the Green Party means that instead of an opposition testing and challenging the government we have a docile and pointless group of placemen waiting for a chance to get into government simply to get a few things for their constituents and jobs for their friends. ... read full story / add a comment

A relaxed yet determined crowd gathered at the monthly vigil in Shannon this Sunday evening to protest against the ongoing use of the airport by the US military and CIA.
