CW Demonstration in Dublin Today

category dublin | anti-war / imperialism | news report author Saturday July 26, 2003 00:48author by Dave - IMC Report this post to the editors

Court Hearing Fails to Fix Date for Trial.

There was a hearing today in the High Court to set a trial date for the Catholic Worker 5 as a result of their action at Shannon Airport last February. However as the gardai had not yet completed the preparations for the prosecutions the hearing was adjourned until October with no date set for the trial. Before today's hearing there was a demonstration in support of the group. It started at the Spike and then moved single file to the Four Courts.

Phew, I thought the anti-war movement in Ireland was dead. I assumed it had dwindled into a fit of analysis and summer package holidays. Perhaps it is that most of the socialist workers are on their school holidays? Or maybe everyone is tired, upset and just fed up with all the badness in the world?
----Or maybe, just maybe, the masses are stalking out around Shannon airport, in neutral independent Ireland, where U.S war planes are landing as you read this.

I think it was. Sanctions didn't solve it, weak-arm tactics by UN weapons inspectors didn't do it (pathetic), passing the buck didn't do it, giving Saddam one final chance didn't work.

All the time the above solutions were being tried Saddam was laughing and allowing the people to die.

Human rights in Iraq are now light years from where they were a few months ago, a new democracy is in gestation, the Israel settlement can now go ahead.

How many civilians really died in the recent war? 7000? I don't believe that. Perhaps 2000 - 3000. Those are the last victims of Saddam's terror.

The war was the right solution. I know it, you know it.

Informed sources have revealed the true identity of controversial Indymedia contributor 'Seanin.' It has been suggested that this is none other than IT columnist Kevin Myers. "I just use it as a warm up for my newspaper column" Myers is reported to have said when challenged.

Seanin gobeen,whatevereen.

Do you ever have unpublished thought?

Does the first thing that comes into your head have to be shared with the world?

From your xenophobic racist observations of the afri walk to this triumph of witticism that you have mustered for us today.

Don't be so scared of the world dude. Come out and play...check out the Book of Numbers & the Nazerite vow...join the dots to John the Baptist and Rastafari.

At the moment your gobsmacked stunned like a 'roo in the headlights of the multiple combinations and permutations the world has to offer. Trying desperately to fend off this stimulation with piss poor cynicism and the prejudicies mummy and daddy left you as their legacy.

Chill, enjoy. Come in the water's fine!

The water's fine. Instead of showing how concerned you all are about the activities of the US, why don't you focus on the real evil in the world?

Why are none of you concerend about waht is happeneing in Equitorial Guinea? As one example.

In terms of evildoing, the US is near the bottom in the rankings. I know this, you know this. Why not focus your considerable energies on Africa, a continent riddled with war and evil dicators?

Oh, soory I forgot, it's not trendy.

Seanin,

You are suffering heavilly from the colonised irish virus of confusing being rebelious with being contrary. Seanin, you are a contrary git not a rebelious one.

Like so many of your bretheran who meet our underresourced underfunded selves vigilling outside the GPO on a Monday afternoon you want to know why aren't we doing a thousand other things.

As the heavilly colonised dude that you are - all you need is one small cynical hook to hang your sense of social repsonsibility on. Cynicism is not wisdom, my son.

See you outised the GPO Monday 4-5.30 where we can explore these issues in greater depth.

You seem a fairly nice bloke and all that but I think you're being dishonest about wanting to change the world.

You should concentrate your energies on the real evils of the world. What's the point in lifting third World debt if the same lousy political systems remain in place? All the benefit will go to the cronies.

I know the US did some vicious things during the Cold War but it was a real war and they fought for their survival when it seemed the entire Occident was about to turn Communist and aim their missiles at them. The Cold War is finished now and I think the good guys won.

As for Gulf war 2, it was the only solution for an intractable problem. How could the sanctions (which Saddam allowed to kill 100s 1000s of his own people) be lifted when the conditions were not met? What message would the UN be sounding out to Saddam admirers around the world?

The whole thing was a UN inspired mess and this war, horrible as it was, has broken the impasse. Now, an attempt is being made to build a democratic country in the Middle East. Now, the Palestinian peace process can go ahead.

Stop pinning the blame for all of the bad things in the world on the US and focus your attention on the legions of ugly regimes around the world which are torturing and killing on a daily basis.

Seanin
The movement I belong to started in NYC/USA in 1933. I'm not anti-American - don't romanticise or demonis it. Got strengths and weaknesses, blessingsn and curses (usualyy the same thing) like the rest of us.

Seanin - If they ever offer you two alternatives always choose the third - neither Saddam or Geroge is the correct answer.

All these empires are passing...realise the kingdom start living your eternal life today,

Why did you call Ciaron a cockroach? Or perhaps you are likening your IMC friend to a sacred scarab?--revered symbol of eternal life among the ancient Egyptians. Is this a common term of endearment in Ireland?

You are my little cockroach too, Seánbuí. You love me more than I do.

That would not have worked for the people of Iraq if we're going to be realistic. Saddam would have made short work of any street protest as he already demostrated. There is no possible way a Soviet style meltdown was going to happen, Saddam was the Stalin of Baathism. It would have been just to end Stalin's terror forcibly, at least that has been done in this instance.

I do have some dreams but I'm not a dreamer. I have accepted the reality of the human animal in that most people will always look the other way unless it's something that directly affects them.

Slán and God bless.

Maybe Ciaron doesn't look the other way because other people's welfare does directly affect him.
Maybe it's because he looks on other humans as his sisters and brothers. Not a bad way to start if you're hoping for a better world.
