LAST year our Department of Health spent more than £300,000 on the Irish language. Now that's what I call really sick. But this was a policy instigated by a Sinn Fein Minister. Therefore, for any of the rest of us to suggest it is a complete waste of good money which could be better spent on the needy would mean being labelled a bigot. |

Surely not the bi-lingual signs in the hospitals?
Did a committee of consultants cream off most of it?
Are you singling out this 300,000 as the only waste in the health system?
300,000 think of all the operations that could pay for, depending on the treatments between six and maybe a thousand ingrown toenails at current prices when you bring in the cost of administration and overheads. This sort of money falls between the cracks and is hardly shocking, its the larger sums that matter, though i feel that the poster just hates irish because of the way its foisted on us and will be shocked at any funding it recieves, if only we all still spoke latin and didnt waste money on english think of the sums of money we could save on that illogical arguement.
didnt think that through did i, sorry poster for spouting, though a good guess on where money goes is publishing reports, leaflets, information and forms in irish
so the Irish state spent 300,000 pounds through it's health service?¿?¿
did you mean 300,000€ Rooster?
bit of a cock up, eh?
what is more scandalous is the National Pensions Reserve fund unethical investments covered by aptly named "stunned".

this last week.
The money was spent by the Stormont health dept. which Sin Feinn controls.
so stormont then is "our" health dept?
welcome to ireland imc, but like stormont health dept. is "your" health dept.
:-)
how much is in the interest of understanding the much maligned neighbours of united kollectives is 300,000stg in €?
including myself would see it as a slight redress for the cultural desruction of our civilisation.
People think it's no big deal that we're English speaking but the psychological damage done by forcing our great grandparents/ grandparents etc, to speak English is still being felt to this day.
You don't know what you've got till it's gone and we should have ditched our religion and kept our language rather than vice versa.
My arse. Shure they were queuing up to learn it ... they knew that it would improve their chances in England and America .......
Time to face the facts, Gaelic is on its last legs, kept alive by a handful of ould toothless peasants and trendy would-be hip non-native speaking middle-class parents who have fallen for the Gaelscoil mullarkey and think that it would be "cool" if their kids had a coopla fuckle ......
Your children will not thank you for torturing them and forcing them to learn dead (or at least moribund) languages ......
" ... the psychological damage done by forcing our great grandparents/ grandparents etc, to speak English is still being felt to this day."
Bejaysus, Prof. Shauneen is now dabbling in psychology after demonstrating his mastery of history ........
Any chance we could have some hard facts to back up these wild assertions ....... ?
It shows that it will take generations to be free of colonial attitudes like his.
Queuing up to learn English? Forced by economic circumstances, beaten for speaking Irish in the playground.
We all know that irish is i mbéal an bháis but I don't want it to die on my watch, It's the language my forefathers spoke before Christ was born and we should rage against the dying of the light.
It's only our colonial attitudes towards Irish that's preventing a revival like that of Hebrew.
Irish is not on it's last legs, we are killing it.
But Shauneen my dear boy, what force was involved ?
Surely it was just the operation of those "free market forces" you so admire ......
The peasant had a choice between remaining where he was and speaking Gaelic or emigrating to better his lot in life which required him to learn a "foreign" tongue ... a choice still faced by many people today in all parts of the world ...
Those with the get up and go got up and went ... and adapted themselves to the circumstances of life in their new homeland .......
Such is the great Darwinian struggle of life.
The weaker cultures are crushed by the stronger, more vital ones ..........
Only the strong survive - the weak go to the wall
Get used to it and stop indulging in "we shuddav" arguments ...........
PS: I'm waiting for your evidence of the "psychological damage" ......
PPS: I find it highly ironic that you can rail against the allegedly destructive influences of "British Imperialism" in the 19th century while proudly proclaiming the need to acknowledge our "ties" and "allegiances" to its 20/21th century successor in the form of the Anglo-American Global Empire ...
Just as the Whitehall spin-doctors of today have plenty of nice honeyed phrases to justify their neo-colonial meddling in Iraq, their predecessors had plenty of pious platitudes to justify their policy of "anglicisation" in Ireland ...
But your perception is too blinkered to spot the parallels ..............
I say iosaf old chap isn't that rather partitionist of you ?
I have never seen anything to suggest that "IMC Ireland" supports or upholds a 26-county Free State editorial policy ......
All in all, a bit rich coming from a former Church of England organist ........
Wasn't the Church of Ireland good enough for you ....?
I think that the money should have been spent on a mass public execution of the upper echolons of the Orange Order. It might even turn a profit if you charged in, and imagine all of the money saved in policing if you took them c**ts out.
Methinks that your indignation is blinkered my friend.
>People think it's no big deal that we're English speaking but the psychological damage done by forcing our great grandparents/ grandparents etc, to speak English is still being felt to this day.
Vell Seaninn I tink yu haff explained many tinks about yourself. yu a vewry welkom to visit me and sit on my sofa.
Economic circumstances. Who said I'm into 'laissz faire' economics? Mr. Aggro has a stereotype of me.
As for psychological damage - you only have to live another country for a little while to see how Ireland ahs a schizoid image of itself. You can see this psychological damage in the way irish people talk to each other, in the way they use English. This would take a book, to explain and I'm no writer but you wouldn't be able to see the damage unless you spent a lot of time outside the country.
Speaking thelanguage of the oppressor makes us sick. See the pathetic ways we try to differentiate ourselves from the English - Celtic football club, Fields of Athenry, Eircom football shirts. it's not much of a culture, is it?
but they don't do churches in Streatham.
Nice place the vicar lent us squatters his parish hall for eviction meetings. "i never thought so many italians could be punks, i thought they were too catholic for the tattoos".
charming eh?
I was joking about the stg/euro.
what did they spend that money on?
...from an ould toothless peasant

"I think that the money should have been spent on a mass public execution of the upper echolons of the Orange Order."
You idiot, you come out with that statement and then accuse me of being blinkered?

Do elaborate dear boy ..... what is wrong with the way the Irish use English .....(apart from Bertie Ahearn but he's a wee Jackeen) ?
Come on now Shauneen don't be shy .... tell us what you mean ...... expand on your point .....
... we should not differentiate ourselves from the imperialist masters of the respective day (US/Brit) at all, but just relax, cease resistance and learn to accept their jack-boot dominion.
In Irish too.
Then maybe the Master will allow his obedient White-Nigger slave an occasional suckle on the comforting dummy-teat of a nostalgic language eviscerated of any cultural meaning.
Can anyone guess from his psycho-profile where Spondeen has "spent a lot of time outside the country?"
Schalom, BP
to argue wit. I hate to see someone so consumed with bitterness that they can't think straight.
Stick to your point, if you have one. Something which appears increasingly doubtful.
and remember, I am the best mate you've ever had - see this link for reminder
( http://www.indymedia.ie/newswire.php?story_id=60553 )
Well, at least I still talk to you, you SadSack, even if most of it is fairly brisk stuff.
Actually, I LOVE YOU, Spondeen, and want to have your Rabies!! ..!?
So come on, Spondeen, no flagging now, no cowardly slinking off like a whipped cur - bite your lip and pretend you're doing it for Butsch.
Schalom Buddy, your only true friend, BlackPope
PS: Reminder of another question you have left open;
Q - how do you propose to repay your individual portion of the supposed Irish obligation to USA?
