Possibly like many if not most other people, I thought Foetal Alcohol Syndrome was a condition that affected the children of alcoholics – those who drank every day throughout their pregnancy or binged regularly. I knew that a couple of glasses of wine with a meal once every week or two wouldn’t do any harm, particularly later in pregnancy. I was supported in that belief by many a doctor and magazine or newspaper article. True, some people said it would be better not to drink but in a context where a glass of Guinness a day was even said to be good for babies because of the nutrients it contained, the total abstainers seemed extreme in their caution. ... read full story / add a comment

Over 60 people attended a public meeting in Dublin on Saturday afternoon during which Caoimhe Butterly spoke movingly of her experiences in war-torn Lebanon over the past six months. Caoimhe very strongly highlighted the western media's tendency to depict the Lebanese simply as 'victims' of Israeli aggression while never showing their dignity and resiliance in the face of death, destruction and invasion. She spoke about the mass movement currently on the streets of Beirut and how it is cross-party and cross-community, and, potentially, poses a threat to the confessional nature of the Lebanese state. ... read full story / add a comment

On Saturday 6th January, Cosantori Siochana, hosted a 24 hour peace camp at Shannon Airport. This vigil coincided with the fourth anniversary of the first peace camp conceived on Nollaig na mBan during the build up to Geoge W. Bush’s war in Iraq. This was during a time when the world was mobilizing for war and peace. In year that the world screamed for leadership our weak kneed government signed its name to the death warrant of hundreds of Iraqi citizens. This act of treachery, praised by Bush, denied by Ahern. The murder perpetuates itself on daily basis on the streets, in the markets and in every state building with the butchers drying their hands through sands of the Iraqi desert ... read full story / add a comment

Veolia Environnement affiliated Veolia Transport is a partner in the Israeli project to build a tramway that will run on occupied Palestinian territory. This is a violation of international law. Veolia received a lot of criticism since it first announced its intentions to become involved in the illegal project.[1] Institut Veolia is an academic institute of Veolia Environnement, aimed at creating prestige and respectability to Veolia's operations. Dr Freddy Karup Pedersen has been involved in activities of Institute Veolia and is thus indirectly involved in this violation of international law. ... read full story / add a comment

Caoimhe Butterly, who has spent the past five months in Lebanon and who experienced the results of Israel's onslaught last year, will be back in Ireland briefly at the end of January. She made international headlines at one point while in Beirut, when she engaged in a direct action protest against the presence of warmonger Tony Blair. During her visit back to Ireland, she will speak on her experiences in Lebanon (in both Beirut and the South) and will be highlighting projects that she is currently involved with (including a film project about life in the wake of the Israeli bombardment and invasion). At present, it is confirmed that she will speak in Dublin, Cork, Belfast, Limerick, Derry, Galway and Nenagh. ... read full story / add a comment |
