Substantial work has been done by each Presidency since 1999 in their examination of this proposal and the Irish Presidency will actively continue the process of reform with the aim of reaching agreement with the European Parliament before the end of the Parliaments term in May 2004. In addition the Irish Presidency in co-operation with the Hungarian govt., will host a conference in Budapest in May 2004 involving all 25 member states. This conference will address both the implications of the reform of (EEC)1408/71 for all member states and the particular implementation challenges facing the new Member states. This will be among the 1st EU Social Policy Conferences to take place after the formal accession of the new member states." ... read full story / add a comment

Owen finally got a chance to make arguments against the bail conditions imposed on him. The judge had previously denied Owen the chance to make arguments. Owen (who hadn't eaten for over 2 weeks, stood for 70 minutes and totally out-manouvered the state, including giving a serious 16 minute grilling to Inspector Tom Kennedy . Read on. -skip the background if you already know it. The words don't do justice to the flair and concentration of Mr. Rice, nor the flustered squirming of Inspector Kennedy and the pained expressions of the judge. Owen will be in Cloverhill Court on Monday morning to apply for the original bail conditions to be restored, and the new ones quashed. ... read full story / add a comment ![]()

An Ógra Shinn Féin motion calling on the party to boycott the World Economic Forum was passed at todays Ard Fheis in the RDS, Dublin. The motion which was opposed by the Ard Comhairle went to a recount and was passed by a slim majority. The Ard Comhairle backed ammendment called for a review of the partys position. However a number of speakers opposed this and called for a decision for or against. This is the first time SF have actually formally taken a position on the WEF. The following motionon on the agenda, also tabled by Ógra Shinn Féin, mandated the party to send a delegation to the next WSF. This motion was passed unanimousely. ... read full story / add a comment

Just been glancing through the Sinn Féin motions list for their conference this weekend. There are a couple of interesting ones in it. One motion states that the party will not go into coalition without any deal having an absolute commitment of opposition to privatisation. Another calls for complete opposition to the Social Partnership PROCESS, whereas before they've only ever opposed the deals, not the process. A motion from the party's youth wing calls for a boycott of the WEF, and two motions deal with both suppoting the Coca Cola boycott and refusing any further donations. Will be very interesting to see which of these are passed, if any, and what the response of grassroots SF members will be if they're not. On the other hand, if they're passed, does it indicate a move to the Left? ... read full story / add a comment ![]()

A protest took place today outside the Department of Justice, Stephens Green. The aim of the protest was to raise the issue of the state of Tibet, which has been forcefully occupied by China since 1951. Protesters held placards proclaiming 'EU MINISTERS HEAR OUR PLIGHT, HUMAN RIGHTS NOT TRADING RIGHTS' and 'RELEASE ALL TIBETAN POLITICAL PRISONERS NOW!' There was a Chinese delegation meeting officials from Iveagh House, and they arrived as the protest was well underway. Joe Higgins TD, also arrived, to speak to some of the groups members, to once more express his total support to those who are fighting for a free Tibet - free from Chinese Genocide, and free from the vast ecological destruction, that is currently being experienced, at the Behest of BP, Shell and other corporations that wish to exploit the oil, mineral and gas reserves of Tibet.
