The Partition of Ireland did not create a peaceful state as what was hoped by the British. There was serious tension in the North in the 20’s and 30’s and the Unionists consolidated their state. There were several stringent measures taken in to end IRA action. Many Nationalists believed that the border would be re-fixed so that they could live in the Irish Republic however this never materialized and the Unionists dissolved Nationalist majority councils and took over their power. In 1921 and 1922 Proportional Representation (PR) was ended in General and Local Elections and although this broke the Government of Ireland Act, the British took no action. Nationalists walked out of Stormont in 1922 after the Unionists got rid of PR and the Unionists then re-drew the council ward boundaries. ... read full story / add a comment

James Connolly is probably the single most important figure in the history of the Irish left. He was an organiser in the IWW in the USA but in Ireland is best known for his role in building the syndicalist phase of Irish union movement and for involving the armed defence body of that union, the Irish Citizens' Army in the 1916 nationalist insurrection. Something is seriously amiss in education. Inequality of access is rampant and it doesn't take a genius to figure out that the latest Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) report and bouts of rhetoric from the government are going to do little to solve it. Beaten back two years ago, the government is once again trying to introduce fees, this time dumping the idea onto the OECD. Peace is essential. Diversity exists but it is up to each person to work at making Unity the goal. Let's look to colonial powers like Zimbabwe who appear to have fallen by the wayside. In November, significant Revenue data on tax reliefs was issued in response to Dáil Questions from Deputies Joan Burton, Richard Bruton and Paul McGrath. Last week, as if it was all a revelation to him, the Taoiseach Bertie Ahern said that 'the game is up' for those who have paid little or no tax through availing of the many reliefs/schemes, which are undermining the taxation system. As a regular commuter from Celbridge it has become apparent that the level of service has gradually deteriorated over the past month. After a series of 1 hour waits at the bus stop I phoned the controller for the 67 route this morning. He informed me that the service is getting progressively worse but there is nothing that can be done about it. Previously when a bus was running so late as to miss its departure time, another bus was sent from the garage to cover it. This is no longer possible, as an application has to be made to the Department of Transport, because running extra buses can be construed as anti-competition. Effectively then, any attempt by Dublin Bus to stick to its timetable is deemed as unfair to private operators! A similar thing happened on No Car Day, when Dublin Bus tried to lay on extra buses. Can it be merely coincidence that this downgrading of the 67 coincides with plans by Mortons (Circle Line) to introduce a "full" service from Celbridge in the New year? ... read full story / add a comment
