Tens and tens of thousands of Irish workers and youth have taken to the streets and confronted the government and the state. What is the nature of this movement and what is its potential? Should it just be seen as a movement to bring down this government and replace it with another government. Or should it be seen as having the potential to bring down the system and replace it with another system. ... read full story / add a comment

Workers move en masse against the water charges. Their leaders can no longer hold them back. The left no longer have an excuse not to themselves be able to build a mass force. The anti-water charges campaign is a populist campaign driven by the opportunist politics of the Socialist Party, the Socialist Workers Party and other organisations including the UNITE trade union. The Socialist Party and the Socialist Workers Party merely view the campaign as a means to enhance their popularity within the working class while opportunistically impeding the development of communist consciousness among the working class. ... read full story / add a comment

Single issue demands such as the movement against water rates hold back the class struggle by suggesting that capitalism can continue in the absence of these charges or taxes. This is because such demands are not embedded in a programme of an interlinked series of demands that challenges the capitalist system. ... read full story / add a comment

The Irish government is charging for public water as part of its TISA signup. This is just the start, we will all pay for all water if they have their way, even if we don't get any services from Irish Water. The eventual plan will be to privatize all resources so that absolutely nothing will be free in this country. ... read full story / add a comment

Water is becoming a corporate resource - the sell off of Irish Water is almost certain Call me a cynic, but I am absolutely convinced that the current Irish government has created Uisce Éireann (Irish Water) with the sole purpose of selling Ireland’s water rights to the private sector within the next decade. Already Uisce Éireann has wasted over €80 million euro in consultancy fees paid to the private sector and it will continue to use private sector contractors to carry out its work, at as yet unknown cost. It is only the fact that it would be political suicide for the government right now that prevents a share issue in the near future. ... read full story / add a comment

The tax protests back in the 70s and 80s proved futile when it came to ordinary working people being heard by their government. In reality the only thing that really happened on those occasions was that working people lost a day's pay. Mass demonstration in Ireland achieves nothing. It is seen as a way for working people and the unemployed to let off a bit of steam so that everything can move along as it was. The trade union movement has not seen or has deliberately avoided other forms of demonstration beyond mass demonstration. The time for change has come, mass demonstration is no longer a proven method of having the will of the people upheld by their political representatives. ts time for change. ... read full story / add a comment

With less than a week to go before more than one million people will be hauled into court for breaking the law the Household Charge protest hs taken one more step closer to success. The only people who believe this tax is justifable are the same people who can well afford to pay this tax. While this government squeezes more and more out of the people politicians like Enda Kenny and Eamon Gilmore give themselves pay rises to compensate them for losses they incured through their so-called ''we are all in this together' cry of unity. Should one million people refuse to pay the cahrge before the deadline of the 31st Match, then this must be seen a s a sign of no confidence in this government and Irish politicians in general.

This post is a quick response to an SWP internal members bulletin, which was presumably leaked by one of their members - available to read here: http://tomasoflatharta.com/2012/02/09/kubla-heard-from-...else/. It gives an insight to the real views of the SWP on a number of issues including the ULA and the CAHWT. I want to take up some of their points relating to the Household tax campaign, which I object to and to offer what I think is the real situation with the campaign. ... read full story / add a comment

The response to the legislation on household tax has been very encouraging. A poll taken on Sunday by Newstalk after the launch of the campaign opposing the tax, showed over 70% indicated opposition and a determination not to pay. This is a great start to what will be one of the dominant campaigns in 2012.  There will be a consistent and vicious propaganda campaign by the establishment which has already begun. There will be intimidation and pressure on people who can face massive fines if they refuse to register for this charge before the end of March. ... read full story / add a comment

I fully support Independent TD Thomas Pringle's call on people to support a campaign not to pay this hideous Household Charge (Poll Tax!!!). Mr Pringle says he will not register for the tax, nor will he pay it. Well done Thomas Pringle :-) At last we have we have some principled TDs in An Dáil Éireann who are prepared to suffer personally for their beliefs they know are in Our Country's And People's best interests. ... read full story / add a comment
