The enthusiasm of people at a recent business offer presentation in the Dublin hotel was contagious. The queues for foreign jobs at a job fare was the opposite. A constant contagion of exploitation of those in need is evident in offers for opportunities offered. Job offers implied following training, the costs invested and the disappointment following discovering it to be not quite accurate have lead to increases in suffering and stress. The promise of cheap holidays and earnings from investing in this hope is growing tiresome. ... read full story / add a comment

After 28 years of operation, Dublin Food Co-op is chronically sick: divorced from its founding principles and acutely dysfunctional. Following a deeply troubling incident in March, this author – until recently one of its most committed volunteers – has found it necessary to part ways. By april 2011,what the new (or not so new) road user will need before applying for their test is £1,125 euros, and a lot of time on their hands,as they will be expected to undertake 20 lessons, after completing their theory test, which will set them back an extra 50 euros. Not everybody passes their test on the first round, and the driving testers, sometimes have the wrong attitude and no people skills, and will just fail you for the smallest slight non endangering mistake. ... read full story / add a comment

Gormley's mad proposals need to be halted. Its amazing how mad Minister John Gormley really is. He says that local councils can save 500 million euros in new reforms proposed that will affect vehicle owners. Its going to get so complicated and costly to own a vehicle in this state that most people will probably give up the dream of owning a car and content themselves with the fact that they will have to walk, or cycle depending on the distance. ... read full story / add a comment ![]()

The McCarthy or “Bord Snip Nua” report on public spending outlined a range of proposed cuts in government expenditure. Of the €5.3b in possible savings, it can be safely said that at least €4b of this (and probably more) targets the working class. Indeed, a full third of the cuts are aimed at pensioners and unemployed. In the private sector, attacks on our class continue in the form of pay cuts, short time and lay-offs. ... read full story / add a comment

"We will set the standards for delivering health and social care services and we will continuously inspect to ensure that these standards are being met." "We will help deliver value for your money by monitoring that the resources in our health and social services are used in a way which delivers the best outcome for the patient or service user." The above lines taken from the front page of HIQA’s web site strike me as being rather gung-ho. It appears that HIQA is setting itself up like some martinet intent on squeezing performance out of unwilling minions. ... read full story / add a comment
