This opinion/analysis piece written by Kieran Mahon Socialist Party is reproduced here because it presents a view on the FAI farce that the mainstream media are unlikely to present. Former FAI CEO John Delaney recently claimed the FAI would be debt free by 2020. They may not even make it that far. On Monday December 17th the shambolic board turned up at Government buildings requesting an €18 million bailout after Deloitte- the FAI auditors declined to class the FAI as a “going concern” meaning its future viability is in severe doubt. In May this year FAI workers, represented by SIPTU, had raised concerns over the financial position and their future with Minister For Sport Shane Ross. ... read full story / add a comment

Only the second Papal visit in 2,000 years by the first non European Pope. Pope Francisco is from Argentina where the United States client state ruled with terror, kidnappings and politically motivated assassination. His papacy appears to have many proactive enemies from wiithin reactionary Catholicism globally and (neo) liberal elites in Irish media & NGO sector. The recent visit was in visual and audio contrast to the only other visit of the papacy to Ireland. Pope John Paul 2nd in 1979 (the year of the Mountbatten assassination, Warrenpoint, punk). What does this tell us about Papa Francisco and contemporary Irish society? ... read full story / add a comment

Each group is independent and invites everyone to participate in making decisions for their local chapter using the consensus process. This article is written as a counterweight against 21th Islamophobia, since few people realize, how much the European civilization owes the Moorish rule in Medieval Spain. Without this rule, there probably should have been no Renaissance, also sciences as Algebra, chemistry, astronomy etc derived from the Arab [Greek] civilization. You know a Medieval English King nearly converted to Islam? Read further ... read full story / add a comment

The commemoration to come, should be indicative, to those with discernment, of the true nature of the government of this country, those who WOULD take from us, everything that our fore-bearers tried to create. As we approach the centenary of the 1916, Easter Rising, we look to our government to remind us of the origins of our nationhood, of the goals, so cherished by former generations and their tremendous suffering and triumphs, so that we may, through self-determination forge for ourselves, a destiny that we may be proud of and a bright future for our children. However, if one engages in some reflection on our first century of modern nationhood, and in particular, the last several years, it becomes apparent that the ideals upon which our country is allegedly founded, are all but forgotten, purposefully forsaken, by those whom we entrusted to guard and implement them ... read full story / add a comment

when we finally get a left leaning government and we start really taxing the rich why not use the money wisely and invest it into a renewable energy model that involves Irish people buying shares in the projects and the money raised by the taxes can be used to subsidise the projects. then when we have reached 100% energy production and are exporting our energy we can use the money raised to reverse the austerity measures implemented and improve Irish society as a whole. ... read full story / add a comment

While unconditionally opposing the policies of Zionism and their slaughter in Gaza it is important to look at the tactics of Hamas. Does their political, ideological and military tactics, such as firing rockets in Israel weaken or strengthen the Palestinian struggles. There is a difference between an offensive tactic like firing rockets into Israel and a defensive military strategy such as organizing a new intifada around mass collective workers organizations and from this base defend the Palestinian people with armed struggle. the NCT was brought in to inject life into the flagging motor sales industry in celtic tiger days, and to create lucrative business opportunites for some lucky people who happened to well connected and in the loop. It's all a bit of a money making scam, which targets the poor disproportionally, gives gardai draconian powers of seizure. Chronic delays in the test system, not to mention reports of corrupt practices make the thing a nightmare for the less well off trying to keep a vehicle on the road in order to increase their chances of finding work. Just another obstacle put in the way of the poorer classes which serves to limit their possibilities and their movements. ... read full story / add a comment |
