Audio of talk by Dr Brian P Murphy osb in the Imperial Hotel South Mall Cork on Fri April 15 2005. Nine audio files - approx two hours in total. This very successful meeting (over 200 present) also saw the launch of Dr Murphy's new book, 'The Catholic Bulletin and Republican Ireland'.
Some recent studies question the ideals of the Irish republican movement, branding it as sectarian; minimising the ideals of those involved; and categorising the IRA as murderers of policemen. These issues were addressed in the talk, which furthers the critique of the approach adopted by Peter Hart in 'The IRA and its Enemies', and in subsequent revisionist work. The debate on the approach by Peter Hart, and his response, has been covered on Indymedia Ireland previously here. ![]()

Economic Partnership Agreements are new free trade agreements between the EU and a group of developing countries in Africa, the Carribean and the Pacific (APC). They are to be operative from the end of 2007, but the poorest countires already have supposed access to EU markets, so there is little gain for them in EPAs. Under EPAs developing countries must open up their markets even more than is required by the WTO. This involves - fully eliminating import duties and quotas on imports - progressive liberalisation of services - opening up of capital markets - liberalising the three 'new issues' refused by them at the WTO in Cancun. Shamefully, this is being negotiated under the EU's aid package - the Cotonou Agreement - which is supposed to be poverty focused. Act on line to stop these unfair agreements, which will be damaging to the world's poorest countries: http://www.comhlamh.org/campaigns/383 ... read full story / add a comment

It seems that we may never be told the full story of what the state (belatedly and begrudgingly) found out from their investigations on GAMA. The High Court has decided that the report cannot be published. I bet that will come as a relief to some people in SIPTU HQ! Remembering the balls-up that was made of the search on Brian Curtin's house, I find it somewhat disquieting that the investigation by the Dept. of Enterprise was done "unlawfully". It seems awfully convenient. http://www.rte.ie/news/2005/0422/gama.html ... read full story / add a comment ![]()

Tallon is the final Garda to face charges relating to mayday 2004. Of the 6+ Garda charged only Garda Paul Daly was found guilty of assault, for which he recieved a 1 month sentence (which is the subject of an appeal) Tallon was charged with this offence over a year ago but the jury were unable to reach a verdict. There still are a number of outstanding charges aganist protestors and several civil cases aganist the Garda, sources assure us that the garda will settle the majority of civil claims out of court. ... read full story / add a comment

While national governments within the EU, and the EU Commission itself, have the legal right to say ‘yes’ to the planting of Genetically Modified Organisms (i.e. GMO crops), it remains the case that ‘regions’ - in Ireland’s case this would be both counties and provinces - have the right to hold referendums and ban GMOs. This process has now started in Ireland with 1,000 GMO-Free Zones being declared by the GM-free Ireland Network. It is a massive first step. ... read full story / add a comment ![]()

From fast food outlets, to assembly lines, from corner shops to hyper markets there is one common relationship. That is the relationship between boss and worker. Those of us that have to sell our time as workers enabling us to pay rent, buy food and engage in leisure activities have nothing in common with those who buy our time. Those of us that sell our time are the employee class. Those that buy our labour are the employing class. These two classes have nothing in common. ... read full story / add a comment
