Wednesday April 20, 2005 16:14 by James R - The Mayday Get Up Stand Up Block
From fast food outlets, to assembly lines, from corner shops to hyper markets there is one common relationship. That is the relationship between boss and worker. Those of us that have to sell our time as workers enabling us to pay rent, buy food and engage in leisure activities have nothing in common with those who buy our time. Those of us that sell our time are the employee class. Those that buy our labour are the employing class. These two classes have nothing in common. Yet ideologues on all sides of the spectrum tell us that class is no longer an issue, history is closed and with it all debates on how society should be run. On one hand we are told we no longer need trade unions and workers’ organizations. Now the unions sit around the table of social partnership as if the bosses, state and workers shared a common interest. The class war is over they say. |

Stand Up For Your Rights
Minutes of meeting held in WSM office on Thurs. 21st April
Present:- Gregor (WSM), James (WSM), Oisin (WSM), Stephen (ISN), Pepe (WSM), Andrew (WSM), Pat, Finbar (WSM), Dave
Apologies:- Ray (IWU), Emma (WSM)
Minutes taken by Gregor
· The text of the leaflet for distribution on Mayday was agreed. It was agreed to include the paragraph drafted by Oisin. James to make necessary changes.
· IWU and ATGWU have both agreed to be included. MANDATE and SIPTU want to see the leaflet before agreeing. Stephen to get leaflet to them for approval. It was agreed that we would have to have an answer by Wednesday in order to give us enough time to get leaflets copied, folded etc. by Sat.
· It was agreed to make 5,000 leaflets. Gregor to make arrangements with Ray to get this done.
· Leaflet for distribution on Mayday march and at other events calling on people to get involved was agreed. James to look after layout of this. Gregor to copy. It will be distributed at Dissent meeting on Sat. (James), Convergence (Oisin), Labour party meeting, Liberty Hall Mon. (Oisin & Stephen), Red Ink (Gregor)
· The tactics and route for Sat. 30th were discussed and agreed. It was agreed that we want a bright and noisy protest but the most important thing is to get the leaflet into the hands of as many unorganised workers as possible. We will form a block on the Mayday march and go back through town after the march. Stephen, Oisin and Dave were given responsibility for deciding when we should leave.
· It was agreed that we would have a short street meeting at the end of our activity. At that meeting we will propose a 2nd leafleting session for sat. 14th May, meeting at St. Stephens Green (Grafton St. end) at 2pm, followed by a campaign meeting. The campaign will continue to meet fortnightly.
· Meet in Teachers’ Club at 1pm on sat. 30th April for leaflet folding before march.
