No longer debatable in the abstract, globalisation is now impacting on Irish education with the local face of a neo-liberal driven Irish state After the defeat of fees last year, cutbacks are being used to force college authorities into an implicit acceptance that funding will have to come from outside taxation. This is no coincidence. The World Trade Organisation's 'General Agreement on Trade In Services' has long defined public services as 'trade barriers' to be eliminated, education is no exception and Article 133 is there to speed up the whole process. Of course the business lobby are only delighted to eye up opening spaces for profit production. The only way to spin a profit from education is through commodification, and like all products the only way we can then access it is through paying. ... read full story / add a comment

Labour Party officials moved quickly this morning to diffuse another simmering row over selection of election candidates with a strong declaration that a convention for the Sligo/Strandhill electoral area had been conducted “strictly above board and in full accordance with party rules”. The statement from the party’s regional organiser, Mr. John Feely came in a response to a claim by Mr. Martin Cadden, who surprisingly withdrew from the contest for selection at Saturday’s convention, that the party head office had “manipulated the system” to ensure that Ald. Jim McGarry would secure a nomination. The row is the latest in a catalogue of differences which have surfaced since Ald. McGarry left Fine Gael to join the Labour Party late last year. On this occasion, Mr. Cadden, who had been expected to be an automatic choice for the Strandhill area for the forthcoming council elections, is claiming his late withdrawal was a protest against head office interference. ... read full story / add a comment

Substantial work has been done by each Presidency since 1999 in their examination of this proposal and the Irish Presidency will actively continue the process of reform with the aim of reaching agreement with the European Parliament before the end of the Parliaments term in May 2004.
In addition the Irish Presidency in co-operation with the Hungarian govt., will host a conference in Budapest in May 2004 involving all 25 member states.

Owen finally got a chance to make arguments against the bail conditions imposed on him. The judge had previously denied Owen the chance to make arguments. Owen (who hadn't eaten for over 2 weeks, stood for 70 minutes and totally out-manouvered the state, including giving a serious 16 minute grilling to Inspector Tom Kennedy . Read on. -skip the background if you already know it. The words don't do justice to the flair and concentration of Mr. Rice, nor the flustered squirming of Inspector Kennedy and the pained expressions of the judge.
Owen will be in Cloverhill Court on Monday morning to apply for the original bail conditions to be restored, and the new ones quashed. ... read full story / add a comment
