Today Conor Lenihan , Minister of Children , who was vaguely
absent , the weeks of the constitutional crisis provoked by the release of Mr A by Ms Justice Mary Laffoy admitted to reporters
that he would listen to young people regarding the age of consent.
This was followed by a worthy statement, wherein he said that
though he would listen, the final decision on age of consent
rested with the deputies( one presumes in the Dail) and not with
the views of the people they hope to question on their sexual habits. ... read full story / add a comment

The Vocational Education Committees and their teaching staff unions seem to be in a bit of a muddle about whether or not teachers at Youthreach centres should be properly qualified. Youthreach is an alternative education facility for pupils aged between 15 and 21 who have not succeeded educationally within the ordinary school system. There can be a variety of reasons - social, educational, cultural - why this happens and the centres provide a potentially valuable opportunity to support a group of young people who would otherwise be seriously disadvantaged. ... read full story / add a comment

Here is a copy of a leaflet a Socialist Youth distributed to highlight the use of Belfast International Airport (Aldergrove) by US military 'rendition' flights.

Leaflets were handed to every one entering the airport, sometimes there was a small queue of traffic to get the leaflets. Most people were supportive of our protest. Hopefully, this will help to expose the state collusion in assisting torture flights. ... read full story / add a comment

Raymond Devos the Belgian born, French resident & Francophone Cartoonist, Comedian, Political (& national) satirist has died of a brain hemorrhage today.

He was a very funny man who's humour & wit crossed borders & langauges.
He will be sorely missed. . Everyone who met Raymond Devos liked him. His jokes were both simple & intelligent. He'll be sincerely missed. He made many friends, most of whom will want to attend his sudden funeral. He won lots of important awards for being funny & clever but won't get a state funeral from either France of Belgium. Raymond Devos was in no common sense of the word a popular man. & sincere with it.

He rose to acceptance of his extraordinary talent through circus acts & written puns of astounding complexity. In 1956 He worked with Jean Luc Godard on the movie "Pierrot le Fou".

Shannon airport is being heavily used today by the US military to move troops to and from the Middle East. Between 9am and 10am there were three troop carriers, World Airways, ATA, and North American at the airport with over 500 troops on board, and likely to be carrying about 500 M-16 automatic rifles, and the same number of 9mm automatic pistols, and assorted munitions.
Military prisoners in shackles may also have been on board, as this is a regular practice by the US military.
Also at the airport was an executive jet, that has been reported as making frequent visits to RAF bases, N750JJ. Further investigation is called for, but this is unlikely to come from the Gardai, who have ignored the vast majority of complaints, or requests for searches of US aircraft, made to them so far.
Nevertheless, I made the statement of complaint and request for aircraft to be searched which is included below.
