offsite link ?It?s Time to Scrap the Asylum System? Fri Feb 21, 2025 17:17 | Will Jones
It's been exasperating to watch as, in defiance of the wishes of Western electorates, the cultural make-up of our countries is radically transformed. It's time to scrap the asylum system, says Lionel Shriver.

The Death of Raymond Devos

category international | arts and media | news report author Thursday June 15, 2006 20:53author by iosaf Report this post to the editors

Raymond Devos the Belgian born, French resident & Francophone Cartoonist, Comedian, Political (& national) satirist has died of a brain hemorrhage today.

He was a very funny man who's humour & wit crossed borders & langauges.
He will be sorely missed. . Everyone who met Raymond Devos liked him. His jokes were both simple & intelligent. He'll be sincerely missed. He made many friends, most of whom will want to attend his sudden funeral. He won lots of important awards for being funny & clever but won't get a state funeral from either France of Belgium. Raymond Devos was in no common sense of the word a popular man. & sincere with it.

He rose to acceptance of his extraordinary talent through circus acts & written puns of astounding complexity. In 1956 He worked with Jean Luc Godard on the movie "Pierrot le Fou".

RIP Raymond Devos (1922 - 2006)
RIP Raymond Devos (1922 - 2006)

Devos was born in Mouscron in Belgium on the 9th of November 1922. He died at his home in Saint-Rémy-lès-Chevreuse in Yvelines region of France earlier today. He is survived by his wife Simone Begiun - thier union had no offspring.

Tributes are already pouring in from the international clown and satirist community & fuller obituaries & funeral arrangements will be reported on soon. There will also be links to all francophone newspaper supplemental "special" re-publications of his cartoons. I presume his cartoons being the more accesible since his jeux de mots were just that - French. But jhis photo reproduced as illustration is probably resonant with an Irish readership..,

I'm minded to qoute the battle hymn of the republic - "glory glory hallelujah! so and so is mouldering in the grave"..,
Many talk about the stream and tradition of western art music which is identified with Bela Bartok maring the passing of an era with the death of Ligeti on Tuesday.
http://indymedia.ie/article/76595
Many have talked of little else these last twenty years since Borges died than the difficulty to follow the universal history of enfamy or Aleph with anything as erudite or beautifully shaped.
http://indymedia.ie/article/76615
Many shrug their shoulders in the francophone world, and wistfully wonder will humour, the pun, stand-up comedy ever be the same now that Raymond Devos is gone.

I don't want to talk about any of that anymore. Era's pass when the last tainted by association with thier worst publically known deeds and misdeeds are gone. Ligeti left students, Borges left readers and Devoy has yet to be discovered by so many. All we need do is look at his wikipedia entry in english - at time of posting the obituary yesterday a few hours after the sudden death - there were only a few lines. Interestingly.., the Suburb of Donnycarney in north central Dublin had no entry at all.
We have all lived in important times and places.., which are the more important?

Ligeti 1923-2006 RIP
Borges 1899-1986 RIP
Devos 1922-2006 RIP

If I may have temerity to close these 3 linked obituaries of June 13 - June 16 to boulderise Othello :-
the best they could say is they did little service to the State

happy bloomsday!
