As the premier event of NUI Galway's Muslim Youth Society, a One Day National Fast for charity was held on the streets of Galway last Wednesday and for good measure, yesterday, on campus, the Galway University students and staff were milked for more human kindness in the shape of serious coin and in Martin Sheen's case, a serious note.

This sweet arsed dude impressed us all with his easy affability and kindness, instead of prima donna, noli me tangere histrionics 'n bollocks, when we requested him to hold the bucket for a few shots, we were graced with sweet vibes, generosity and willingness instead. ... read full story / add a comment

Roadblocks / Checkpoints were set up by Gardaí a few hundred metres either side of Rossport Solidarity Camp, before dawn this morning, to intercept campers on their way to the picket at the Bellanaboy Refinery site. A similar roadblock happened last week also, though this morning's checkpoint was more aggressive with 8 police in two Garda vehicles, ‘quoting’ the Road Traffic Act and demanding names, addresses and dates of birth from drivers and all passengers not previously 'accounted for'. Video and still cameras were also used to film and photograph all involved. Sgt. Conor O'Reilly has been patrolling around the area all day accompanied by a number of Paddywagons, surveying campers and stopping other camp vehicles. Numbers of Gardaí have been seen by local residents today in Glengad and across the bay in Rossport with cameras looking for a view into the camp. ... read full story / add a comment

Last Wedneday, when protesters who are opposed to the destructive scheme that Shell and their partners the Irish Government, Statoil, and Marathon Oil want to impose by force on the people of Erris, scaled the roof of Corrib House, they were surprised to find that the building has windows that don't seem to lock.

Several members of Shell's staff tried various options for keeping the window that faces out onto the roof closed, but all proved useless. At one point there were five different men all trying to shut one window (presumably in case one of the scary protesters tried to force their way in through it).

Nobody in the company proved able to mend the broken catch, and as the protest gathered attention, the staff got more and more irritated with the window. Perhaps they realise that the fact that they can't organise window catches that work, doesn't exactly build confidence in their abilities to build and run an extremely high-pressure raw gas pipeline through a bog... ... read full story / add a comment

Last Friday evening Clare Shell to Sea staged a picket outside the local Shell garage in Ennis. This protest was held to show solidarity with the beleaguered people of Erris. With just under twenty people gathering outside the forecourt a spokesman for the group said " this is a great turn out considering the call out was at short notice". Many of the protesters handed out leaflets to passing traffic as most of the drivers beeped the horns in agreement of the sentiment.
Although Royal Dutch Shell sold its many retail outlets last year the Shell to Sea campaign has stage many pickets at franchised petrol stations all over the country. This tactic in Ennis was working well on Friday with no motorists stopping to fill up with shell petrol. This picket will continue next Friday after a public meeting in Ennis. The time and venue will be announced soon.
