Animal rights colleagues and myself from the Alliance for Animal Rights had teamed up with the Star newspaper when they offered to highlight the pigs plight and we offered to try our utmost to get new homes and locations for the then considered 'inedible' pigs. The Irish Department of Agriculture have killed all of the 200 pigs that survived the accident last week in Kerry. Apparently they are edible and are being used as food, we were told that 11 were killed for supposedly 'humane ' reasons. They refused to give them to us after they survived the accident, we were prepared to help them to live out their lives as most animals do,when fate gives them a second chance. ... read full story / add a comment

‘The democratic process has failed for the people of Rossport’, said John Monaghan, who is directly involved in the dispute with Shell in Mayo. ‘They rolled out the black carpet for Shell, built a special road for them, while we’ve been looking at potholes.’ He said local government had rolled over completely for Shell, and the community has received no support either from Mayo County Council or from most of the local TDs. ... read full story / add a comment

Kerry is America's oldest friend, and a true one at that. When the first Kerry man, Brendan, set foot in America circa 575 AD it created a unique link between the lands and a close bond between their peoples. Over the centuries millions of Kerry people have journeyed across the atlantic to our western neighbour, America. These people and their descendants played a hugh part in the building of that great nation, that land of freedom. Also, over the years, millions of Americans have come to visit Kerry the land of their ancestors. Recently, we in Kerry have become concerned about what is happening across the water. It appears that America is currently ruled by a president and political regime who both lie to, and, manipulate our American friends. This results in restriction of freedom and human rights. Also, by lying to other nations, violating and ignoring international laws, treaties and conventions, America's respect and credibility around the globe is waning. ... read full story / add a comment

There were angry scenes at today's INTO conference when delegates attacked the union's endorsement of a 'killer coke' stand in the conference foyer at the main entrance to the conference. Handwritten posters protesting Killer coke were distributed around the conference. A petition was circulated among the delegates and a number of speakers denounced the stand to loud applause. One delegate, John McAnulty of East Down INTO, halted the business of conference under standing orders to demand the removal of the stand. He condemned what he claimed was a deliberate policy of support for coke - one third of INTO Northern delegates had voted for a boycott, The union had been contacted by Columbian trade unionists and were well aware of the boycott call. They were also aware of the debate in the trade union movement and that even unions opposed to the boycott stopped well short of actually supporting or promoting coke. The union leaders have promised a statement later ... read full story / add a comment |
