Robert Anton Wilson or "RAW" managed to achieve something quite extra-ordinary in his life. He coined words for a sub-culture, ensured the legacy of William Seward Burrough's "23", explored time slips and James Joyce whilst living in Ireland in the book of the illustration (& and being a generally nice but somewhat weird guy). What was really cool about the man - was his lack of paranoia. More than any other contemporary American writer he had mananged to make a comfortable living from life options which normally we do not counsel the young to pursue. He asked us to ignore and see the fnords just to test us if we knew they were there or not... to wonder about the wires going into our houses and if they ever left....... to think about how fake money really was. Not since Bob Dylan went electric and Phil Ochs succumbed to his demons has America had a “protest singer” and songwriter as compelling as David Rovics. Now Rovics, the favoured musical voice of the newly revived US anti-war movement, is doing a short tour of Ireland from February 18th to 26th – and splitting the proceeds with peace activists here. “David Rovics is a guy George W. Bush would probably like to clamp in chains at Guantanamo Bay,” says BBC DJ Andy Kershaw. (Rovics has a song about Bush called “Moron”.) Cindy Sheehan calls Rovics “the peace poet and troubadour for our times”. Rovics is visiting Ireland later this month and will play benefit gigs for Anti-War Ireland in Cork and Dublin. ... read full story / add a comment

Animal rights colleagues and myself from the Alliance for Animal Rights had teamed up with the Star newspaper when they offered to highlight the pigs plight and we offered to try our utmost to get new homes and locations for the then considered 'inedible' pigs. The Irish Department of Agriculture have killed all of the 200 pigs that survived the accident last week in Kerry. Apparently they are edible and are being used as food, we were told that 11 were killed for supposedly 'humane ' reasons. They refused to give them to us after they survived the accident, we were prepared to help them to live out their lives as most animals do,when fate gives them a second chance. ... read full story / add a comment

Eco -Soc Galway and SPUNOUT were delighted to host inspirational anti -war campaigner Caoimhe Butterly last week. In a talk entitled 'Peace War and Media' Caoimhe gave a human dimension to recent events in Lebanon. Photos of scenes from the southern Lebanon area where she is currently based showed faces and families directly affected by the Israeli Defence Forces bombing this summer. The recent Sit-in protests in Beirut came dramatically to life from her words and photos.A livley question and answer session chaired by Lelia Doolin brought the talk to its conclusion. ... read full story / add a comment |
