Anti-nuclear activists have been demonstrating outside and inside the annual meeting of stockholders of one of Germany’s electricity giants, the transnational EON. A coalition of environmental groups protested in Essen against EON’s plans to expand nuclear power production. Some of the countries where EON is planning new nukes are Finland, Great Britain, Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria. In Russia the infamous trinational Urenco uranium enrichment company, partly owned by EON, has dumped some 80,000 tonnes of depleted Urenco uranium as waste. ... read full story / add a comment

While others canvass to gain entry to the Rich Man's Palace, there were others that remembered that every May the 1st is the day to remember workers' and working-class communities' struggles across the world and throughout history. The Campaign to Save Tara is jubilant at today’s announcement that construction is to be stopped on the proposed route of the M3 through the Tara/Skreen Valley. Under the National Monuments Act the archaeologists contracted by the NRA were forced to declare a likely National Monument has been discovered. It had been the Save Tara Campaign that first alerted the National Museum to the potential significance of the Liamullen site, which is within 100mts of the Rath Lugh monument, and directly within the path of the proposed motorway. The Lismullen site had not been accurately identified during the initial archaeological survey of the route and the discovery of a henge almost 80mts in diameter and comprising of three concentric circles caused surprise to the archaeological contractor and near- apoplexy at the National Roads Authority. ... read full story / add a comment
