My family have shared a back fence with the Enoggera Army Barracks since the late 1950's. My older brother Sean and I were raised during the long years of the Vietnam War next to this second largest military base in Australia. My parents are still there, the base is still there, the rifle range is audible form our home, the lowflying military choppers occasionally pass over our house and young men and women in uniform fill the aisles of the local Brookside Shopping Centre. Sean and I have spent 30 years in anti-war activism that has taken us to resistance actions, court secenes and prison from New York, London, Texas, Roxby, Jabiluka, Nurrunga, Cunungra, Carbahla, Amberley, Pine Gap, Nevada Nuclear Test Site to Dublin's Four Courts but never before had we been drawn to the gates of nearby Enoggera. ... read full story / add a comment

They will meet with Willie this Thursday 10th May at 12.00 outside St Nicholas’s Church and all are welcome to attend.

The Goldman prize is internationally renowned. It is the equivalent of a Nobel Prize for the environment. Willie was awarded the €93,000 prize in a ceremony in San Francisco two weeks ago. During his US trip he had the opportunity to put his case to leading US political figures. It was awarded in recognition of the Shell to Sea Campaign, which opposes the controversial ‘Corrib Gas’ project in Erris Co. Mayo.

As part of the ongoing IPSC campaign against the Grafton group, who own Woodie's and Atlantic Homecare, and their aiding and abetting of the Israeli economy through the sale of Israeli manufactured goods, chiefly Keter plastic garden sheds and wheelbarrows, eight of our Galway activists picketed the Atlantic Homecare branch in the Wellpark Retail Park and the Woodies one in the Galway Retail Park, eliciting, except for some malodorous shite and abuse, a sweet response from passing pedestrians and especially in our walk from Atlantic Homecare to Woodies, with all flags flying, a very sweet one from motorists. ... read full story / add a comment

Two days ago no-one accused Segolene Royal of scare-tactics, dirty electioneering, or any kind of pre-Uachtaran vulgarity when she remarked that riots would greet a Sarkozy victory.

Accordingly 3,000 riot cops were deployed in central Paris. All the riots where kids burned cars before were in the periphery. To the relief of the establishment the anger didn't leave the ugly quarters.

Then Sarkozy won. Overall on 85% of electorate with 50.19%. In posh central 16čme arrondissement where he will now live "in a certain insecurity" he got 80.81% but out in ugliesville 20čme arrondissement Paris he only got 35.37%.

What was ugliesville to do? Burn their buses and be ignored again? ... read full story / add a comment
