While European Union heads of state were gathering in Lisbon today, to sign away the sovereignty of their respective states, the removal vans were arriving in Dublin to cart off the last vestiges of the Twenty Six County state’s independence.

In a bold visual display éirigí launched its ‘NO TO LISBON’ campaign outside Leinster House today. The centrepiece of the launch was a mock-up ‘EU NO_TO_LISBON Removals’ van sporting the slogan ‘Experts in the Removal of Independence, Democracy & Neutrality’. Sinn Féin held a major event in Dublin last Sunday to sketch out the beginning of a new way forward for the party, particularly in the 26 counties.

The day-long conference, entitled 'Engaging Modern Ireland', was designed to re-start SinnFéin's electoral activities after the disappointing general election result last May.

Kazem Darabi who was sentenced to life imprisonment by a German court was released on Monday 10 December after serving 15 years in jail. He had been convicted of involvement in the murder of three leaders of Iranian Kurdish Democratic Party (KDP), Sadegh Sharafkandi, Fattah Abdoli, Homayoun Ardalan and their translator Nouri Dehkord in Berlin. They were dining in the Mykonos restaurant and were in Berlin for a convention of the Socialist International.

Irish, Basque and Catalan protesters picketed outside the GPO on 8th December to protest repression by Spanish authorities of Basque left-separatists. Kilkenny Republican Sinn Féin held a very successful picket in Kilkenny city on Saturday December 8. The picket was held at the Town Hall on High St between 1pm and 2.30pm. Members of Kilkenny Republican Sinn Féin were joined by Republicans from Waterford, Wexford and Kildare.
Leaflets were handed out explaining the situation of the Republican prisoners in Maghaberry, whilst copies of the Republican paper SAOIRSE were sold. Addressing the crowd Republican Sinn Féin Vice President Des Dalton, Kildare, said that the Republican prisoners in Maghaberry were locked in a struggle to vindicate the right political status for which Bobby Sands and his comrades died on hunger strike in 1981. ... read full story / add a comment
