Born after the success of a Summer Craft Fair in Bealkelly Wood, the first weekend of traditional craft courses took place under a few hastily hoisted tarps between the trees in the wet Autumn of 2002.

It was booked out.

Since then, the event has gone from strength to strength and the workshop infrastructure along with it, so much so that the little 'Village in the Woods' looks like a scene out of an Asterix comic.

Weekends in the woods take place three times a year in Spring, Summer and Autumn at the invitation of host Del Harding in his woodland home on the shores of Lough Derg. ... read full story / add a comment

AN animal welfare charity that rehomes abandoned greyhounds for Bord na gCon has been told to pick up a huge tab after the board said it has no more money to give them.

Gina Hetherington of PAWS in Sallins, Co Kildare, says she has been left reeling by the news that the Irish Greyhound Board's 2006 fund for retired dogs, which stands at €250,000, is apparently gone - despite being just four months into the year.

The charity, which rescues abandoned greyhounds from pounds, may now have to find up to €145,000 to cover veterinary bills, kennel boarding fees and transport costs or else leave the unwanted dogs to their grisly fate. ... read full story / add a comment

Activity, Debate and Comradeship was on the agenda at April’s 6 County Ógra Shinn Féin meeting. The setting for the weekend of activities was the beautiful Mourne Valley of South Down.

Included in the weekend of activity was a ‘Smash Political Policing’ Protest at Kilkeel PSNI Barracks which saw protestors scale the wall of the Barracks and adorn it with ‘End Political Policing’ Posters, a launch of Speaking Rights in the Dail campaign, walk for Suicide Prevention and a 6 County meeting which involved debate around the current political climate and setting out a plan of activity for the coming months. The day, ended with a meal for everyone, getting together to reflect on the day’s activity.
