With the death toll from Israel's genocidal attack on Gaza now approaching 1,000 and the "international community" standing idly by twiddling its hypocrisy, Galway Free Palestine Campaign in empathy with the Gazans did an eight hour protest in Shop Street yesterday and will continue to do so until the killing frenzy stops. At least one forthright man is not prepared to mouth the usual inanities about "restraint" and all that nonsense but unequivocally condemned Israel for its genocide: "The number of victims in Gaza is increasing by the day... The situation is untenable. It's genocide ... the Palestinian people have been subjected to subhuman treatment for decades and this (the Israeli offensive) is going to make matters worse." (Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann, President of the UN General Assembly) ... read full story / add a comment ![]()

There were 20-30 people protesting at the dáil today, which included members of the public and IPSC, as the Israeli ambassador arrived for a hearing before the Irish foreign affairs committee. There was a lot of media there also, but the ambassador slipped in through another entrance. No details were given to any media from the Israeli embassy about his time of arrival or what entrance he was going to use. All pics (c) Michael Gallagher ... read full story / add a comment

On January 11th. 2002 the U.S. opened its twilight zone and star chamber at it's military base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Guantanamo has come to symbolise the fast track acceptance of kidnapping torture as mainstream U.S. policy. Shannon Airport in Ireland has been used extensively for refueling of illegal kidnapping flights. Tens of thousands of others are detained and tortured in U.S. gulags in Iraq, Afghanistan, Diego Garcia, aboard ships and elsewhere known and unknown. ... read full story / add a comment

About 50-70 people attended the pro-Israel protest at Leinster House today. It was hard to see exactly how many were there because so many media people went over to interview them. Someone said they counted twenty different journalist at one stage. The majority of the people attending were quiet and subdued, with a bit of praying and singing (more like humming) going on, but three or four stood at the barrier and shouted abuse at the Palestinian counter demonstration. This was called at short notice, and outnumbered the Zionists by about three or four to one. ... read full story / add a comment ![]()

On Sunday afternoon human rights activists in Limerick flash-mobbed two stores guilty of profiteering from trade with the illegitimate, delinquent Israeli state. Shoppers in Atlantic Homecare and later in Dunnes Stores stood open mouthed as a rousing chorus "Boycott Apartheid Israel" suddenly rang out across the store. ... read full story / add a comment

100 - 175,000 march in Barcelona against Gaza massacre and call for Israeli boycott. Due to the ongoing massacres being carried out in the Gaza strip at present, 700+ Palestinians killed, mostly women and children, the protest in the streets of Barcelona was attended between 100 and 175 thousand people, thats about 2 full Croke Parks. Activists, at some stage, mounted a construction scaffolding and attached a banner in Catalan which was a slight modification to the famous poem "First they came…" about the Nazis coming for, removing and disappearing all those they then opposed: the communists, the jews, the trade unionists, the Catholics, the intellectuals, the last of which was the poems author, Martin Niemöller (1892–1984), was part of. Yesterdays banner included "Now they are coming for the Palestinians" ... read full story / add a comment

Just before today's march in support of the people of Gaza, a number of activists marked the shelves of the Marks and Spencer's stores in Dublin with stickers bearing the slogan: Stop the Slaughter in Gaza- Boycott Israeli Goods. Although not everything for sale in M&S comes from Israel, the company has a unique relationship with the Zionist state, judging support for the country as a fundamental business objective. As Naomi Klein argues in her article from thenation.com (reprinted in the Guardian today), Israel's leaders can be comfortable that there is no economic cost to their genocidal actions in Palestine. The Israeli stockmarket has actually risen since the attack on Gaza began. ... read full story / add a comment

Approximately 1,200 people attended - it was a spirited protest with some very good speeches. Many joined the march as it made its way from Daunt Square down the length of Patrick Street, down Merchants Quay and then into Parnell Place where it halted near the CIE bus station - where bus drivers are organising a collection for the people of Gaza. Then there were a few more addresses and the march turned round and retraced its steps back to Daunt Square. So far as I am aware nobody from either Fine Gael or Fianna Fail was there - but good representation from Socialist Workers Party, Socialist Party, a Green Party councillor speaking for himself, Sinn Fein, Kathy Sinnott MEP. Representatives from Cork Muslim Community spoke as did Dr Hamid Abas, of the Deaprt of Micro Science at UCC - who is also Chair of the Cork Muslim Group. Present also was Humaira, Cahirperson of the Women of the World Group in Ireland. ... read full story / add a comment ![]()

Israel has been using a huge amount of munitions and explosives in its assault on Gaza. War crimes have been committed during this assault in which over 800 Palestinian people have been killed including as many as 250 children. Over the past 48 hours four Hercules military aircraft landed and were refuelled at Shannon airport. Their destination is not yet known, but in recent times only about four military aircraft were refuelled at Shannon per month. The possibility exists that Israel is being resupplies with munitions expended in its murderous attacks on Palestinians by aircraft transiting through Ireland and Irish airspace with the permission of the Irish Government. ... read full story / add a comment ![]()
