"The situation is untenable. It's genocide" (Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann, president of the UN General Assembly)
With the death toll from Israel's genocidal attack on Gaza now approaching 1,000 and the "international community" standing idly by twiddling its hypocrisy, Galway Free Palestine Campaign in empathy with the Gazans did an eight hour protest in Shop Street yesterday and will continue to do so until the killing frenzy stops.
At least one forthright man is not prepared to mouth the usual inanities about "restraint" and all that nonsense but unequivocally condemned Israel for its genocide: "The number of victims in Gaza is increasing by the day... The situation is untenable. It's genocide ... the Palestinian people have been subjected to subhuman treatment for decades and this (the Israeli offensive) is going to make matters worse." (Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann, President of the UN General Assembly)
![Click on image to see full-sized version maggie_1.jpg](../cache/imagecache/local/attachments/jan2009/460_0___30_0_0_0_0_0_maggie_1.jpg) A rampaging weasel in a chicken coop has more restraint than Israel with its wanton disregard for human life and its treatment of Gazans as laboratory rats: Two Norwegian doctors who have just returned from Gaza have accused Israel of testing a new experimental weapon known as Dense Inert Metal Explosives, or DIME. The weapon causes the tissue to be torn from the flesh. Dr. Mads Gilbert said, “We have seen a number of very brutal amputations…without shrapnel injuries, which we strongly suspect must have been caused by the DIME weapons.” Dr. Erik Fosse said, “I have seen and treated a lot of different injuries for the last thirty years in different war zones, and this looks completely different.” http://www.democracynow.org/2009/1/13/headlines#5
Further, Jonathan Cook is reporting in Counterpunch that: The munition is supposed to still be in the development stage and is not yet regulated. There are fears, however, that Israel may have received a green light from the US military to treat Gaza as a testing ground. “We have seen Gaza used as a laboratory for testing what I call weapons from hell,” said David Halpin, a retired British surgeon and trauma specialist who has visited Gaza on several occasions to investigate unusual injuries suffered by Gazans. “I fear the thinking in Israel is that it is in its interests to create as much mutilation as possible to terrorise the civilian population in the hope they will turn against Hamas.” ... Wounds from the weapon are said to be distinctive. Those exposed to the blast have severed or melted limbs, or internal ruptures, especially to soft tissue such as the abdomen, that often lead to death. There is said to be no shrapnel apart from a fine “dusting” of minute metal particles on damaged organs visible when autopsies are carried out. Survivors of a Dime blast are at increased risk of developing cancer, according to research carried out in the United Stateshttp://www.counterpunch.org/cook01132009.html
Activists from Global Women's Strike were also out on Shop Street yesterday, vocal and angry, they received much deserved attention from the public (see below Indymedia posting).
