Last week 2 officers of the French police force were attacked while doing thier rounds in one of the sink estates that adorn every urban centre in that country. Nothing strange in that you may say. They dress like soldiers these days because they're used to being attacked. But Sarkozy saw his opportunity to highlight like no other can - the difference a poor unfashionable neighbourhood enjoys in "comunity policing".

Yesterday afternoon a force of at least 200 riot police "surgically extracted" 12 teenage suspects from the Corbeil-Essonnes / Tarterets housing estate of Paris. Somewhere buses don't go coz they were all burned last year. ... read full story / add a comment

Perhaps the two most feared words in the English language today are “suicide bomber”; the propaganda machine in the west ensures that these two words continue to strike fear and terror into the hearts of the civilian population. Circumstances occasionally present all of us with unusual opportunities. When a young man who claimed the above distinction wished to make known his story it would have been a dereliction of my profession to refuse the request. The public interest is not served unless both sides of a story are made available. ... read full story / add a comment

Anyone able to cast their mind back over the Robocop film franchise should be able to recall the many Omni Consumer Product ads featured in the film with their distinct dystopian undertones amidst a sea of promise. A similar style of ad has been circulating on the Irish inter-web as a viral video. Produced by the 'multi-disciplined, multi- talented' Wasaki Global Corporation it details the plans to build three islands off the coast of Dublin, complete with a replica Howth, 42,000 flats, 3 golf courses, several motor-ways and a giraffe only zoo. Yeah right says you., next they'll try and resurrect Atlantis. Word on the blogosphere would suggest that it's the work of an ad agency called Chemistry who conceived it as a stunt to launch new property website Funda Ireland. Clever bastards, eh? Well clever enough to take in a certain Labour politician on Morning Ireland earlier today. ... read full story / add a comment

7th of October 06: Transnational Actionday against migration-control

One year after the escalations in Ceuta and Melilla a broad network of Migration related initiatives call for freedom of movement in a transnational day of action. In dozens of cities in Europe and also in Africa manifestations and demonstrations are in preparation for 7th of October. It was decided to organize such a day of migration-related actions at the European Social Forum in May 2006, when about 15.000 people from different social movements met in Athens. ... read full story / add a comment

The one glaring undeniable fact regarding the Bush administration is the fact that they have failed in ALL their endeavours – in other words they have done nothing right. The latest display of neo-con ineptitudes by John Bolton and Condoleezza Rice regarding their tactical inaction during the conflict in South Lebanon reveals the essential ideology/philosophy of the neo-cons – not only [to], ‘GIVE WAR A CHANCE; but also, WAR IS THE ANSWER’! Chavez : "As Chomsky says here clearly and in depth, the American empire is doing all it can to consolidate its hegemonic system of domination, and we cannot allow them to do that. We cannot allow world dictatorship to be consolidated. The world tyrant’s statement -- cynical, hypocritical, full of this imperial hypocrisy, from the need they have to control everything -- they say they want to impose a democratic model, but that's their democratic model. It's the false democracy of elites, and I would say a very original democracy that's imposed by weapons and bombs and firing weapons. What a strange democracy. Aristotle might not recognize it, or others who are at the root of democracy. What type of democracy do you impose with marines and bombs?" ... read full story / add a comment

A well-known method of subjugation utilised by conquerors and rulers alike is, “divide and conquer”; this strategy applies equally in times of war and peace. It may surprise many but this method remains the principal means of social control in today’s western societies. The primary divisive structure today is the (separate, ‘closed-door’) nuclear family and the principal divided unit is the psychically isolated, competitive individual. [It should be noted that the ‘individual’, as distinct from the group, is a relatively recent social creation.] ... read full story / add a comment

An Irish farmer has used the Ryder Cup and the endless streams of choppered in VIP's to make a general point on peace. The farmer describes how 'as the rich and powerful politicians chopper their way to the Ryder Cup, they might have to avert their gaze from my little farm next door.' Why? Because on this small area of farm land beside the K-Club venue he has made a huge CND style peace symbol encircled with a 'peace on earth' slogan. Weird or what? Photos are at the following link. ... read full story / add a comment
