There are important lessons for the Irish Left to learn from the outcome of the recent General Election in the south of Ireland. Not least if the left is to build support and gain momentum at the Ballot box, it must offer its core electorate policies that give hope to Society and especially those within it who are less well off economically. The Left need to collectively draw up a program that advocates re-unification, greater freedom's and democratic accountability, full employment, fairness in the work place, a sustainable environment; affordable homes, and a re-distribution of wealth which brings to an end the massive chasm that has opened up between the wealthy and the majority of the Irish people during Bertie Ahearn's period in office. ... read full story / add a comment

Set in the DDR in 1984, actors, stasi, writers and politicians display some of the
best and worst vestiges of humanity against a backdrop of dimly lit deserted streets, grey buildings
and fenced in feelings. Stasi agent Wiesler a loyal servant of the party and the state believes
writer Georg Dreyman to be not so loyal, a crime in the stasi agents eyes.
Wiesler gets his chance to nail the writer when the corrupt and seedy Minister Of Culture decides he wants Dreyman to be found guilty of anything. The politicians motives have nothing to do with love of party or state. ... read full story / add a comment

The Six One News tonight was followed by a Consumer Soap Opera 'Docu' special
on the intimacies and murder of the O Reilly Marriage. Serious Reporters
discussed with alacrity the 'ins' and 'outs' of the case. This is because RTE
are consumer driven shite and incapable of Opinion and analysis.
-They like to give the public what it wants-

This kind of mentality drives US Consumer TV where Newsreaders burn
reports on Paris Hilton. When did RTE last analyse Geo- political movements
GM/ECO/. It has become popcorn TV for the Great brainwashed Irish Nation. ... read full story / add a comment

In the last while attention on this site has been brought yet again to the suicide crises & adjacent mental health issues amongst our young. We've read much & been directed to yet other sites and resources who like most of us want to do our bit to tackle the problem. There seems to be growing concensus that the nasty hard approach just isn't working. Yet we've still got some work to do in appraising what that means & how it ought influence contemporary anarchist & friends activism, conversation, chit-chat & attitude. It goes without saying the judicial, penal & educational policies and frameworks of both the Irish state & Irish society have a role to play. But lest we get diverted into learning a list of "warning signs" & "indicators" of those dealing with the various psychological or emotional challenges which may lead to suicide I thought to bring it back to primary school. The failed terrorist attacks in the UK have prompted another debate about the causes of such violence – and the ways to end it. Anyone who seeks to lay some of the blame at the door of western governments must expect a torrent of abuse from right-wing commentators and the “Cruise missile Left”, reinforced by a useful collection of house Muslims and renegade jihadists keen to put the spotlight on factors within the Muslim world that are beyond the influence of US / UK elites. ... read full story / add a comment

For the first time in their history, the Irish Green party is in government. The deal that they struck with Fianna Fail has been criticised in many quarters as a “sell-out” – and with some justification, since the Greens have changed sides on the issue of Shannon airport’s use by the US military, the conflict between Shell and the residents of Rossport and the decision to route the M3 motorway through the lucratively re-zoned lands of Fianna Fail supporters, who happen to live near Tara. On these, and other issues, the Greens switched, overnight, from a position of opposition, to jobs in a government that is implementing them - with force when necessary. ... read full story / add a comment

No-one has put a street value yet on the 110 kids seized by lifeguards and customs guards today off the Dun Laoighaire coast. Nor has the Taoiseach made a facine statement to the Dail on the increase in irresponsible use of leisure craft in our waters. But analysts like me are quick to point out the links on safety issues as the suicide prevention exercise organised by the Royal St George Yachtclub under the smokescreen title "junior regatta" occured on the same day 11 teachers ran rather than walked down the stairs of the National musem of Natural History causing it to collapse.
Ambulances were obviously stretched to the limit and headshots today went untreated. ... read full story / add a comment
