The Spanish have a word for it, they call it "callejera", it means street violence which includes arson, houses, businesses and cars get burnt. The Basque term is "kale borroka", its thought of as the lowest level of sustained urban unrest. The French today, look at their newspapers and see photos which usually they see in Iraq of cars in flames. But this time its "their cars", as their prime minister De Villepin assured the national assembly from the floor. They must be very re-assured. Even though he was never elected. One morning my mother was in the basement feeding wet-washed clothes into the ringer when she paused to rest for a moment. With the ringer off she suddenly realised the house was quiet - unusually quiet. She took a careful look around and thoughtfully headed for the stairs. It was equally quiet in the kitchen. She moved more quickly now as she headed upstairs. The bedromms were empty but before climbing to the attic, she noticed the bathroom door was fully shut. Approaching, she thought she heard a noise. Some do not want to remember those who died during WW1 while fighting in the British Army. But it should be remembered that many of them were economic conscripts and many others were duped into joining the BA by John Redmond. Remember all of those who fell, be they Irish, Scottish, Welsh, English, Turkish, French, German Austrians, Russians or Anzacs. http://www.welfare.ie/publications/sw108.html I find European Commission working too slow in this issue; anti-discrimination groups and unions don't seem to me to be taking it seriously enough, the general public is uninformed. At best, people show not much interest. This is part of a complaint about the implementation of the Habitual Residence Condition by the Irish Government. The rich, and beaurocrats of Rio de Janeiro wish to bulldoze 100 year old favelas, home to 1.1 million of Brazils poor. 20 % of the population of Rio de Janeiro live in the favelas. The greater the diversity of life in a woodland, the greater the health of the woodland as a whole and the greater the health of all the individuals in the wood. Nature takes care of itself and will generate balance. The 'Woodsman' or the 'Hand in the Woods', to translate correctly, can help nature, can concertina time to a certain extent and can create a symbiosis with nature, with an ecosystem, with a woodland. Last week saw the publication of this year's "transparency org" world corruption perception report. Its a report which is taken seriously by some, and certainly no country looking for foreign investment wants to be at the bottom of the 158 rankings. But both the annual list of "corruption perception" and "bribery perception" indixes, can not be understood as isolated statistics. Just as Greenspan's biographer assured us he takes stock of over 4000 weekly indicators, we can not consider just one single country or economy when discussing corruption or bribery. With the pressure on the Minister for Injustice McDowell and the Government to tackle the Garda corruption being constantly exposed, an opportunity exists for all those affected by police harassment to push for a genuine independent complaints body.
