Robert Fisk points out the similarities to the current US military situation in Afghanistan and the situation the USSR was in prior to their pullout: 1. Up to 25% of the weapons caches are imported since the US occupation 2. The US has had to abandon several military outposts 3. Rape of women and burning of schools is still going on. 4. Al Qaeda still operate a radio station within Afghanistan which calls for the expulsion of the Americans. Where's the "success"? Fisk asks. Are the US going to have another "success" like this in Iraq? References a New York Times article by Marc Kaufman read full story / add a comment

As Colin Powell stands before the UN and attempts to convince the world that Hussein and his regime are actively supporting Bin Laden and his cronies, a Britsh governemnt report is leaked stating (in no uncertain terms) that no such links exist. A Chronicle reporter was present when the astronaut arrived. First seeing the image on a large computer screen, she had one word: "Wow." In the critical shot, a glowing purple rope of light corkscrews down toward the plasma trail, appears to pass behind it, then cuts sharply toward it from below. As it merges with the plasma trail, the streak itself brightens for a distance, then fades. "It certainly appears very anomalous," said Jernigan. "We sure will be very interested in taking a very hard look at this." read full story / add a comment

On 31 january, activists held a 12 hr vigil in Derry's Guildhall on the 31 anniversary of Bloody Sunday against Raytheon, the arms trade, and the commission of the Bloody Sundays of the 21st century. At the end of the vigil they posed for a photograph holding a placard which reads "FREE MARY KELLY", in honour of their Donegal sister charged with allegedly sabotaging an American weapon of mass destruction at Shannon. The only place to bury your hatchet is in the instruments that are going to read full story / add a comment
