Approximately 150 people gathered today in Guildhall Square, Derry in a show of solidarity with Iraqi victims of British military violence. The crowd gathered around a large black cloth map of Iraq as they listened to families read accounts of how their own relatives were killed by the British military in Derry and Belfast. The families’ testimonials also included references to particular Iraqi victims of British state violence. The event was covered by local radio and news media who photographed and interviewed families. ... read full story / add a comment

"My parents live in the house next door. We called them to make a hole in the wall [to] escape. They brought hammers and they made the hole. "First of all I helped my children escape and then I carried the old woman through the hole. The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul has urged people to make waste collection charges an issue in the local elections. The charity has said increasing numbers are calling its helpline for assistance due to the privatisation of public service providers, which refuse to offer waiver systems for those on low incomes. Society Vice-President John Monaghan has said people who are not even on social welfare are contacting them. "At the head office on the Cabra Road, which only deals with the Dublin area, the number of calls to the society in April 2002 was about 350 in a month. In 2003 it had gone up to 550, and April this year it had gone up to over 1200. Many of those were first time callers, people who are in work but on low pay and are struggling." ... read full story / add a comment

In the run up to the Mayday protests, the Dublin Grassroots Network suddenly leapt to prominence and almost became a household name. However, despite all the coverage, there was little examination of the nature of this network that organised most of the Mayday protests. This text briefly describes the network, where it came from, who is involved, how it works and where it is going. For those who want to find out more or get involved, there is a public meeting at 2:30pm on Saturday May 22nd in the Teachers Club on Parnell Square, where we will be talking about the good and bad of the Mayday weekend and our plans for the Bush visit. More details at the link below. ... read full story / add a comment

Speaking today, Peter Mc Bride, whose 18 year old son Peter was killed by British soldiers in Belfast in 1992, gave the reasons for his intention to attend the Derry vigil tomorrow (see link); "The Scots Guards who shot Peter in the back, after having searched him, were then sent to Basra. What kind of message did that send to the other soldiers based there to be on patrol along with convicted murderers? When John Spellar [currently NIO minister for 'Criminal Justice and Human Rights (!)]and General Mike Jackson decided that the murderers of my son were fit to wear the Queen's uniform they showed total contempt for our family and for justice. Is anyone surprised at the stories now coming out from Iraq? " ... read full story / add a comment
