No wonder workers are allways on the back foot fighting battles> Struggling up hill to defend themselves their jobs and their futures. Employers/Management have a vested interest in keeping workers on their knees. But when (So called) brother and sister unions, in a vain attempt to save face try to "Pull the rug" from under the feet of workers about to embark on industrial action, then the trade union movement is in a sorry state. ... read full story / add a comment

It's difficult to succinctly represent the emotions in Peru today as the former president Fujimori returns from Chile on an extradition order to faces charges of corruption and human rights abuses. But when both the newspaper of the establishment "El Commercio" and the local (((i))) indymedia node coincide in minute by minute coverage of the event, it surely merits our attention & a passing reminder of at least some of the chapters of Peru's history which may soon see appendices of justice written. ... read full story / add a comment

Staff in the Thuringian town Nordhausen hold occupied their factory 'Bike-Systems' for two months now in an attempt to prevent the factory being closed down. Met with remarkable solidarity from their wider community the workers now decided to kick-start production of bicycles in self-management. To be able to do so however they need a guaranteed number of 1800 orders in advance for their 'city-bike'. These orders need to be in by 2nd of October.

Routes for Shell high pressure pipeline

Since the arrival during the summer of Garda patrol boats on the Sruwaddacon inlet in Broadhaven Bay, many local people have been convinced that Shell's plan was to force their high -pressure pipeline under water, up the bay and reach the refinery site without having to cross very much privately owned land.

Today, the company has shown three different routes, but the shortest is up the bay and it would be difficult to find anyone in Erris who does not believe that the inlet is Shell's preferred route.

sunflowers mark the border of the new SCR garden in Dublin 8

Some months back, people from the Dublin community gardens collective secured the legal use of a space on South circular road, across the road from the White Heather factory behind which the original "Dolphins barn commmunity garden" was started 2 years ago on squatted land but that was later evicted. They have been busy over the past while, quietly and happily digging away, gently making a beautiful social space which is an example of what a more sustainable community or city looks like. There is currently a lovely new addition to the old Dublin 8 street, just after the Mosque coming from the city centre: a line of very colorful sunflowers now stand out against the green of the veggies and flowers growing behind in the SCR plot. The collective have at least another 2 years in this space and hopefully things will keep on growing so that this garden turns into a permanent green space for the city. All newcomers are people interested are welcome. ... read full story / add a comment

It's been clear for the last 2 years that the argument against the Shell Corrib Gas Project is won.

And the amount of cars beeping their horns in Ennis this evening is testament to the support for Shell to Sea, genuinely.

The Government continue in their refusal to debate the arguments and negotiate a settlement, and they persist in using force against the protests at Bellanaboy, a protest that has gained national and international support and recognition as ... LEGITIMATE & JUST.

Greens - You have buried your heads in the Fianna Fáil mire. Yoy are complicit now. You are proving yourselves to be unreliable and unworthy of trust. The Green Party pumps for Shell.
