AN animal welfare charity that rehomes abandoned greyhounds for Bord na gCon has been told to pick up a huge tab after the board said it has no more money to give them. Gina Hetherington of PAWS in Sallins, Co Kildare, says she has been left reeling by the news that the Irish Greyhound Board's 2006 fund for retired dogs, which stands at €250,000, is apparently gone - despite being just four months into the year. The charity, which rescues abandoned greyhounds from pounds, may now have to find up to €145,000 to cover veterinary bills, kennel boarding fees and transport costs or else leave the unwanted dogs to their grisly fate. ... read full story / add a comment

On Thursday may 11th at 11.30 am four antimilitarist activists will be on trial for a military train blockade in fall 2004. The public prosecutor asks for a sentence of one year’s imprisonment, while the activist’s lawyer pleads for acquittal. The trial has been postponed already two times, the last one because of the absence of the witnesses (4 policemen) for the prosecution without giving any reason. ... read full story / add a comment ![]()

An American F-14 tomcat tail fin was discovered washed up on an Irish Beach on friday this week. The fin was in very good condition which suggests it has only been in the water for a few weeks or months. The U.S. navy denies losing any planes in the region or any tail fins, so this begs the question, where did it come from? What are the U.S. military covering up? ... read full story / add a comment

A large crowd turned out in Belfast city centre today for the May Day parade. I'm no good at calculating numbers so I'll just let the photos speak for themselves. If anyone feels the need to use any of the photos from the parade, could you please credit me with taking them? Either that or you could give me a couple of quid; I don't mind either way. ... read full story / add a comment

We at Pioneers for Peace are pleased to announce that our second meeting on the 4th of May went very well. The following is a summary of the debates and discussion that occurred which further proves how torn and confused Americans are over the war in Iraq. One of the major hurdles we must overcome is the american superiority complex and how we are unaware of how military operations in Iraq affects the security and well being of other smaller countries. America has so much influence on the world that its past Kerry vs. Bush election was more important to the people in areas like Nigeria, and wealthier countries like Germany than elections in their own nations. When americans vote they do not always understand that they are not only voting for themselves but influencing every country in the world. In West Virginia people often wonder if enough people even vote to make local elections valid so voter apathy as americans should be nearly the equivalent of committing a crime. The great country of Ireland has become a warmongering nation and potential terrorist target due to its cooperation with the abused US military by allowing warplanes to land and refuel there which are on their way to perpetuate crimes against peace & humanity in Iraq and Afghanistan. Peace activists worldwide such as Ireland's own Mary Kelly are referring to the United States as the largest terrorist organization in the world so we at Pioneers for Peace organized a debate with pro war americans to delve deeper and perhaps come to a better understanding. Michael Moore himself said something like its no fun to interview people that always agree with you and more can be learned when opposites collide. ... read full story / add a comment ![]()

Two weeks ago, on a routine visit to monitor the on going war crimes that is the Bertie Ahern led governments facilitation of the of the US military troops and intelligence services (CIA) at Shannon Airport, I witnessed a new devolvement at Irelands second international airport. Sitting on the main apron in front of the terminal building was an Israeli Air Force 707. After a while a group of military types disembarked and jumped into the “Fixed Base Operator” minibus. They were taken to the Great Southern Hotel where they billeted overnight. Initially I thought this an emergency landing. Shannon Airport has been used on numerous occasions by the US Air Force to land aircraft in trouble. The latest happening only months ago when a C17 reported to be carrying Helium (yeah right) landed safely. Today the Israeli Air Force is Back in Shannon. ... read full story / add a comment
