On Sunday 6th of August 2006 the Unmanageables laid flowers on the Hiroshima memorial stone in Merrion Square. They used child-sized puppets to draw attention to fact that children have been the main victems of the war in Lebanon. A letter was handed into the Taoseach's office calling on him to get off the fence and condem the war. Afterwards the Unmanageables held a fifteen minute vigil outside the Israeli Embassy ... read full story / add a comment

If you think of North Antrim, or Indeed Ireland, then the first natural wonder that you think about is the Giant's Causeway. So where better to send a message of solidarity to the oppressed people of Lebanon from, than the stoney steps of the Giants Causeway. This was one of only a number of events held at in North Antrim this weekend. North Antrim Ógra Shinn Féin organised a very successful, packed weekend of events recently (4-6 August). ... read full story / add a comment

Summary:Peace activist Adam Keller' sends a vivid diary account of Saturday's anti-war rally in Tel Aviv in which Israelis and Palestinians took part. The rally was estimated at between 3,000 and 10,000. A young man spoke of his refusal to go to fight in Lebanon. The main speaker, a peace activist, had been with his wife in the back room of their home near Haifa when the front room was shattered by an exploding rocket nearby. When the press arrived, the peace activist decided to play the piano to send a message of peace, but the following day the picture appeared with war-like captions implying that he wanted revenge. There were disturbances, eggs thrown at the demonstrators, 300 black flags stolen. from them and two demonstrators arrested. There were also some memorable speeches from veteran anti-war people ... read full story / add a comment

Shell to Sea went among the crowds attending the All-Ireland Semi Final between Waterford and Cork today, asking for donations and giving out leaflets, information on the campaign, and the ubiquitous Shell to Sea stickers. The response amongst the sports fans was overwhelmingly positive, and the large amnounts of money raised will go towards more leaflets, protests and public meetings in the future. Latest reports sugges that Shell will attempt to start building work at their proposed refinery site Bellinaboy at the end of thiis month or iin early September, using the confusion sown by their recent announcement that they are to "re-route" the pipeline to give them an advantage over the resistance networks around the country who will be trying to galvanise protests against them. This means that Shell to Sea have a month to alert the public that the "re-route" is an empty public relations exercise, and the root of the problem, like the route of the pipeline, hasn't changed. ... read full story / add a comment

At the High Court on Monday 31st July, members of Bantry Concerned Action Group were about to issue proceedings under section 160 of the Planning Act against the ESB, arguing that the powerline proposed in Bantry is currently an unauthorised development. The proceedings were providing a welcome respite for protesters to so far have successfully blocked the ESB from continuing work along the route of the powerline. Farmers along the route assisted by members from the Solidarity Camp had successfully blocked numerous efforts by the ESB to off-load poles, bring diggers on-site etc. The exercise, according to the ESB, cost them €15,000 each day, with virtually no results for all their efforts. At time of writing, all machinery and equipment has been removed from the area. ... read full story / add a comment

The Ballybane windfarm being developed by local businessmen Murnane and O’Shea requires a grid connection to a sub-station 14 kilometres away. Over twenty farmers along the route have been blockading the ESB to prevent them from constructing overhead powerlines. ... read full story / add a comment

From Madrid to Buenos Aires, from Caracas to la Paz, throughout the spanish speaking world - governments and political representatives send messages of "get well soon!" to Fidel Castro who has now placed the ink stamp of leadership in the hands of his younger brother Raul. The health of Fidel Castro is intrinsically tied to the health of the state of Cuba. & he's an old man now just short of his 80th birthday. He is in fact the "grand old man". & his death will see many changes long expected and equally as long feared. Already Cuban exile groups mostly found in Florida USA, led by the charismatic Gloria Estafan have announced plans to democratise the state when he goes, and modernise it in the best shiney way turning the clock back as far it will go. ... read full story / add a comment
