Today, for seven back-straining hours, Shell to Sea activists toughed it out with the inclement weather and pneumonia to bear witness to the Five, now in day 58 of their obscene incarceration, garnering rakes of petition signatures, dispensing leaflets and outrage to the good people who flocked to our info table to similiarly bear witness.

The day was capped with an hour's picket/blockade of the Statoil Servive Station at the nether end of Bothar Mhor which drew the mild attention of two Gardai and an avalanche of supportive car honks and power salutes. We'll be out again tomorrow and Saturday and and and. ... read full story / add a comment

Geoffrey Dawson Lane, Baron Lane AFC QC PC (July 17, 1918 – August 22, 2005) a former British Lord Chief Justice of England & Wales who presided over the Birmingham 6 appeal trial has died today at the age of 87.

He will be remembered for many reasons.
* he followed Lord Widgery.
* he had "strong views" on murder, rape and sexual morality.
* he played a part in both Birmingham 6 and Guildford 4 trials, which saw 10 people serve lengthy sentances for IRA attacks did they not commit. ... read full story / add a comment

All of County Louth measures 82,613 hectares.

Fires have burnt at least 134,500 hectares (337,000 acres) of Portuguese forest from July to August, more than in all of 2004, according to forestry service estimates last week.

2,700 firefighters were battling 35 fires on Sunday afternoon. Neighbouring Galicia in Spain wants to be declared a disaster area as well, as of this morning 17 fires were still burning 6 of them considered critical. People are about to be killed in two provinces of Ecuador to protect the "rights" of an Oil corporation.

Ecuador's government (not an exemplary one) has asked for Venezuala's assistance to continue its exports of crude Oil. Venezuala is "loaning" the oil, which is then being "put through the global books" as Ecuadorian, so that they continue to "meet their international obligations".

They have been unable to "meet their international obligations" recently because the people of Sucumbios and Orellana provinces have been protesting because they believe their government are failing to "meet their national obligations". ... read full story / add a comment

on the 14th of August 1969 British troops entered the statelet of Northern Ireland, an event which came to be seen by many as the start of modern Irish History.
on the 24th of March 1972 the post of "Secretary of State for Northern Ireland" was created by the UK government after the dissolution of the Stormont parliament which had ruled the statelet since 1922.

The 11th person to hold the post, and the only woman was Dr. Marjorie "Mo" Mowlam who was the British government direct ruler of northern Ireland from May 3, 1997 to the 11th of October 1999

She died today at 56 years of age. ... read full story / add a comment
