On the afternoon of 2 July people protesting the conditions at Maghaberry jail took over a sixth floor office at Dundonald House, headquarters of the Prison Services, to draw attention to the worsening situation. Last weekend, prisoners inside the jail protested and 7 prisoners took to the rooftop overnight to protest the lack of segregation in the jail and the new attempt to "double up" loyalist and republican prisoners in the same cell. As a result 4 prisoners have embarked on a no-wash protest. All visits have been suspended in response by the NIO.

The protesters at Dundonald House hung banners from the windows and were able to have a spokesperson and relatives of prisoners speak to the number two person in charge of the Prison Services to explain the problems, including the lack of communication to families when they raise their concerns about treatment of their loved ones.

BERLIN, July 2 2003 Martin Schulz, German Socialist questioned Silvio Berlusconi’s suitability for his new post.
The German legislator specifically raised Mr. Berlusconi's sponsorship of a new immunity law in Italy at a time when he is on trial in Milan on bribery charges.

"Mr. Schulz," Mr. Berlusconi said in reply, cocking his head to one side and smiling, "I know there is a man in Italy producing a film on the Nazi concentration camps. I would like to suggest you for the role of leader. You would be perfect."

Can someone please shed light on how this man has managed to not only become the Italian Prime Minister but also for some bizarre reason now holds the Rotating Presidency of the European Union? ... read full story / add a comment

Privatising the World: Water, seeds, genes, healthcare - very few things today are not to be considered saleable commodities. 'The Bottom Line' investigates the privatisation of the world and invites us to reflect on the 'common good' notion which is threatened by the decreasing role of the state and the prevailing trend to patent everything that obviously seemed to belong to society for generations.

The fifth Grassroots Gathering ran from Friday 27th to Sunday 29th in Dublin. Over 160 libertarian activists from different movements opposed to neo-liberalism and war took part in a very ambitious programme of events. The levels of energy were high, and participants seemed to take control of the event for themselves without problems. A highpoint was the involvement of two Argentinian community activists from the massive movement against neo-liberalism there.

Key outcomes include setting up working groups towards actions around the World Economic Forum meeting this October, agreement to hold an assembly in a few weeks' time to take this further, agreement to keep anti-war networks alive in some form, and the offer by Galway to host the next Gathering after the WEF. ... read full story / add a comment
