A young member of Ógra Sinn Féin last Saturday night noticed that a building was flying a Union Flag in Newcastle, County Down Ireland. This "butcher's apron" flag is of course offensive to many Irish people, and since the building belonged to the avowedly sectarian "Orange Order" the young man decided that the best way to peacefully protest was to scale the building and remove the offending symbol. Sadly, after removing the flag, the young ÓSF member lost his footing and fell from the roof, injuring his arm. He has received medical treatment and is recovering. ... read full story / add a comment ![]()
Fatima Regeneration Project Phase 2 is again plunged into turmoil as a consequence of Developer P.Elliott/Maplewood acting in contravention of agreement with local residents despite their co-operation in what could be only best described as a un selfish act of burden bearing by a minority of residents in order to achieve benefits that would be by and large enjoyed by many people some from far wider afield from their local community. ... read full story / add a comment ![]()

"To endanger such a place is a symptom of the greed, corruption and disrespect being shown for nature, people and our environment. The solution to this controversy is to re-route 7 km of the double- tolled Motorway, but it seems that vested interests in this area have been preventing the consideration of any alternatives. Members of the Limerick branch of the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign mounted a picket outside the new Woodie's DIY outlet on the Ennis Road, Limerick on Sunday afternoon. Earlier this year the IPSC sent letters to all Grafton Group plc Board members informing them about the international campaign of boycott, divestment and sanctions against Apartheid Israel and asking them to refuse to sell products manufactured in Apartheid Israel until it abides by international humanitarian law and adheres to the norms of civilised behaviour ... read full story / add a comment ![]()

The Sunday newspapers have shown great coverage of the Labour Party leadership contest after the resignation of Pat Rabbitte. However, for most left-wing activists the clash between Socialist Party's Joe Higgins and the Socialist Workers' Party's Richard Boyd-Barrett is very interesting. Not prepared to weep crocodile tears, not prepared to wallow in vicious hypocrisy, instead, Galway IPSC did an eight hour slog outside Lynch's castle, Shop st, yesterday, in an attempt to wean people away from the 'aul sins of indifference and apathy towards the plight of Palestine and, instead, do something ; from boycotting Israeli Blood Diamonds, spuds, herbs, plastic garden sheds/containers sold by the Grafton Group (Atlantic Homecare/Woodie's DIY stores) to expressing their outrage to TD's, mainstream media, etc, on the obscenity of an Irish company; Cement Roadstone Holdings, profiteering from the construction of the illegal West Bank Apartheid Wall. ... read full story / add a comment ![]()

There's definitely a lot in, on & under this. Earlier this week global media attention was brought yet again to far right street violence in Germany when a mob chased several men of Indian origin through the streets of a small town. It is just over a year since the book burning incident at Pretzien (see article footnotes) & thus there is no reason to believe that the soul-searching which followed that incident amidst promises of appropriate action & policy to stave off racism have had any real success. But back to that drawing board the German state went this week as then the anniversary of Rudolf Hess the deputy to Hitler was marked by calls by the Udo Viogt the leader of the German far right party to posthumously award Hess with the Nobel Peace prize. As of yesterday Voigt is in custody & may face three years in prison. ... read full story / add a comment |
