Outraged and revulsed at the wanton butchery in Gaza and wanting to do more than wring our hands in impotent empathy, a number of concerned people and activists two weeks ago formed a flying picket and for the last two Saturday's protested outside Galway stores selling Israeli products (and one pro-Zionist fast food eatery), urging shoppers with conscience to boycott Israeli goods and food stuffs until such time - to mention just a few our concerns - as Israel complies with international and humanitarian law, UN resolutions, Fourth Geneva Convention, withdraws from the Occupied Palestinian Territories and dismantles its illegal West Bank colonies ... read full story / add a comment

The Disaster Emergency Committee in Britain, which is a group of about 20 of the country's leading charities is making an appeal for urgent aid for the people of Gaza. Britain's broadcasters have for about 40 years aired these appeals free of charge. By convention, the appeal will only be broadcast if all of the broadcasters will agree to do it. The BBC has refused to broadcast it and so too have Sky - on the grounds that it would bring their 'impartiality' into question. The BBC Director General and the corporation's executive committee made the decision late last week . It has caused outrage all over Britain and within the corporation itself where staff and unions are deciding what action they can take to make senior management reverse this decision. Staff have been threatened with the sack for speaking out in public. ... read full story / add a comment

On Friday 23rd January members and supporters of the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign in Belfast picketed the BBC building at Ormeau Avenue to protest at the BBC's refusal to broadcast the Disasters Emergency Committee appeal on behalf of the people of Gaza and to draw attention to continuing BBC pro-Israeli bias in their manner of reporting. Our arguments were set out in a letter handed in to the News Editor and reprinted below : ... read full story / add a comment ![]()

A group of anti-zionist activists distributed leaflets and picketed the Liffey Street Marks and Spencer store in central Dublin today. Marks and Spencer's is unusual in that as well as selling Israeli goods, the company has a corporate relationship with the Israeli state. The response from the majority of people was very positive, with a great many people refusing to pass the picket. After a while the management of M&S called the gardaí, but since there is no crime in leafleting, they left the protesters in peace. ... read full story / add a comment ![]()

This article is an attempt to articulate a view that our EU, and particularly Monetary Union, membership has not been beneficial - and in fact ruinous - with respect to the current economic crisis. Just before Christmas The Bogside Artists published a small book for children called Travels with Li Po. The book written by one of the trio, William Kelly has caused much controversy because its resemblance to Harry Potter is, for many who have read it, conspicuously obvious. A lawyer who was shown the list of parallels between the Harry Potter series and this book was "flabbergasted". ... read full story / add a comment |
