Press accounts published in Ireland over the past decade, however, have linked the company to an influence-peddling scandal that rocked the Irish political establishment during the 1990s. Moreover, the man at the center of the controversy has had past ties to Carlyle Group, an American equity investment firm that is stacked with high-ranking former U.S. government officials with checkered careers. ... read full story / add a comment

Last Saturday, members of the Galway Palestine Children's Appeal were "overwhelmed" by the public response to their appeal for humanitarian aid for the children and people of Gaza - expecting one 40ft container to be filled with medical supplies, household goods, non perishable food, clothes and toys, a further two had to be ordered and to ease the pressure, a request was broadcast by the local radio station, Galway Bay FM, for donors to procrastinate their visit to the drop-off point at the Black Box theatre until the delivery of the third container - this morning, at 7AM two of the stuffed containers started their journey of mercy and there is a large stockpile of aid awaiting the arrival of the third. Including an operating table from Letterkenny Hospital, medical staff in the west donated money and supplies and businesses such as the Galway Radisson Hotel gifted 100 duvets and pillows. ... read full story / add a comment ![]()

A fundraising hour for Gaza is being held by an Irish charity at lunchtime this Friday. Irish Medical Aid for Palestinians (Irish MAP) is an Irish registered not for profit organisation, established in 2007 with the overall aim of providing the necessary help and support to the Palestinian people in order to protect, maintain and improve their health. Irish Map (Medical Aid for Palestinians) has made an appeal for members of the public to raise money during “Gaza hour”. Do your bit for the suffering people of Gaza. The charity aims to raise €430,000 for medical supplies, which it says is some 10 cent for every person in the country. Due to an embargo on Gaza’s borders, the organisation is raising money for the Palestinian Red Crescent Society rather than collecting medical equipment. Schools, workplaces and community groups are being called on to collect money using activities of their choice. ... read full story / add a comment ![]()

Outraged and revulsed at the wanton butchery in Gaza and wanting to do more than wring our hands in impotent empathy, a number of concerned people and activists two weeks ago formed a flying picket and for the last two Saturday's protested outside Galway stores selling Israeli products (and one pro-Zionist fast food eatery), urging shoppers with conscience to boycott Israeli goods and food stuffs until such time - to mention just a few our concerns - as Israel complies with international and humanitarian law, UN resolutions, Fourth Geneva Convention, withdraws from the Occupied Palestinian Territories and dismantles its illegal West Bank colonies ... read full story / add a comment

The Disaster Emergency Committee in Britain, which is a group of about 20 of the country's leading charities is making an appeal for urgent aid for the people of Gaza. Britain's broadcasters have for about 40 years aired these appeals free of charge. By convention, the appeal will only be broadcast if all of the broadcasters will agree to do it. The BBC has refused to broadcast it and so too have Sky - on the grounds that it would bring their 'impartiality' into question. The BBC Director General and the corporation's executive committee made the decision late last week . It has caused outrage all over Britain and within the corporation itself where staff and unions are deciding what action they can take to make senior management reverse this decision. Staff have been threatened with the sack for speaking out in public. ... read full story / add a comment |
