Since 2001 there have been 12 Grassroots Gatherings In Ireland with most of the big cities seeing at least one. Probably 1000 people have attended at least one but we've had a problem keeping contact with each other between gatherings. There are a scattering of email lists and web site from the different gatherings, some active and some silent. Now there is a new hub site http://grassroots.pageabode.com which attempts to gather all this in one place to improve communication. ... read full story / add a comment

Mainstream Media report on Fash at Rossport by Scott Millar, from Irish Examiner print edition.

They constitute the largest security force in the country, outnumbering the gardaí and army combined, and were meant to be regulated in a manner that would ensure that criminals and paramilitaries were excluded from their ranks. However, in recent days, serious questions have emerged about who actually makes up Ireland’s over 20,000 plus army of private security guards. ... read full story / add a comment

This is the latest stage in the 8 yr saga of multinational waste management company Indaver and their efforts to construct two incinerators (a municipal and industrial one, now called Waste to Energy Facilities) at Ringaskiddy, Cork Harbour and the work of local group CHASE (Cork Harbour for a Safe Environment) to stop them. It is possibly the third oral hearing in this long drawn out, gruelling and horrendously complicated process. ... read full story / add a comment

The Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) were present at this year's Mayday march in Dublin City. The IPSC formed one of the biggest contingents in a very poorly attended demonstration. We bring you more good news! The European Union have just announced that they are to ban the trade in seal products into Europe. This good news comes amid fierce opposition from the Canadian government whom have been sending countless delegations to Europe in order to lobby Ministers and MEP’s. Their campaign has been built on lies and bullying tactics. Today’s news will now mean that once the legislation comes into force, it will be illegal to sell or trade in seal products from countries such as Canada where the cruel commercial seal hunt takes place—thus cutting off a major market for seal skins ... read full story / add a comment

The morning of 17th April last before he was murdered, 30-year-old Basem Ibrahim Abu-Rahma went to the house of Hamis in the village of Bil'in to dispense his medicine - 3 months previously, Hamis sustained head injuries as a result of being struck by the same type high velocity tear gas bullet that would kill Basem, "then off he went to visit another friend in the village who is ill with cancer. Then a little girl from the village wanted a pineapple but couldn’t find any in the local stores. So Basem went to Ramallah to get a pineapple and was back before noon for the Friday prayers and the weekly demonstration against the theft of our land by the apartheid wall" http://www.bilin-ffj.org/index.php?option=com_content&t...id=30.

As is customary in Cork, the evening of May 1 sees trade unionists, workers, socialists of many organizations and cherishers of the Bealtaine traditions march together through the city centre to remember the struggles and sacrifices of the countless millions of working-class people through history and to affirm our continuing commitment to the vision of a better world they bequeathed us. It’s also a time to celebrate and recognise socialist comrades among us who’ve given decades of unwavering commitment to working for positive social change in the world. ... read full story / add a comment
