As of this morning (Mon, 12th May) McSweeney contractors have returned to demolish what remains of the western sandbank at Murphy's Quarry where the sandmartens have been nesting. A Cork City Council enforcement order some weeks ago to protect the birds and their young was ignored until Duchas sent a representative to the site. Then it was understood that all work would stop until at least the nesting season was over. Birds were still nesting there as of late yesterday evening when they were seen returning to their nests in the sandbanks of the former Murphy's Quarry. The developers D&J Coleman Builders and their demolition subcontractors McSweeney's seem to be totally above the law which is not being enforced. ... read full story / add a comment
