Dublin city councillors last night voted overwhelmingly to preserve 16 Moore Street - the last headquarters of the leaders of the 1916 Rising.

Labour councillor Mr Joe Costello TD had tabled a motion proposing that the building be retained and incorporated into the planned regeneration of the immediate area.

He also proposed that it be developed as an education and information centre. Just one councillor, Fine Gael's Mr Chris Giblin, voted against the plan. He said he feared it would hold up rejuvenation of the area. The building forms part of the Carlton development site, which is the subject of a compulsory purchase order by Dublin City Council. The site is also the subject of a High Court action by its owners, the Carlton Group, who want the order lifted.

thank you!
aint that sweet.
number 16 Moore st. saved.
isn't it odd that every campaign that is aired here which is set in a radius of 50 metres of O'Connell street succeeds?
there is something in that. Maybe all the libertarians, anarchists, socialists (ah go on), sinn feinys, and greens should just move to Dublin 1.
We could become the "dublin 1 set".
turn it into a worker friendly paradise where the republik lasted for ever, brehon law reigned, BIKE and wheelchairs the only wheels acceptable, the Gardaí would smile and smoke skunk, and windmills would charm the visitors dragged along for the singsong.

Unfortuantely that is not the real world.
ohno.
in the real world, teenage girls are taken from Bylorussia and the Ukraine, sold for 10euros a shag in the east of the EU, and when they get pregnant their child is sold to organ dealers.

This happens.
every day.
Yesterday in the real world, the Italian police broke a "ukranian ring of mafia" doing just this, in 1998 a Swissair consignment of human organs dissappeared off the runway of a Kaxhikastan airport, the organs we are assured never found new homes.

In your body, where you live and think, maybe your teeth are replacable, maybe your kidney if you are on the list for fifeen years.

In the bodies of the mega rich, everything is replacable, from skin to liver to kidney to heart to certain sections of brain.

Think on this.

I sincerely hope there is some sort of judgement for those who engage in this trade.
and I'm sure I'm not alone.

I'm glad that it now looks like 16 moore street isn't to be demolished. History is an important thing and should be preserved at all costs.

Already we lost some of our best heritage thanks to the policies of the council, look at Wood quay that was an outstanding place of archeology and understanding how the Vikings lived in Dublin.

Robert Emmets house was demolished so that St Stephens Green shopping centre could be built on it.

Part of the South Dublin Union, beside the petrol station outside James Hospital was demolished so that apartments could be built on it. There was talk about knocking down Kilmainham Gaol a few years back again to build apartments but the idea was rightly scrapped.

Then there was Carrickmines - but luckily people power won out that day as it appears to have done so with the house of Hanlons fish mongers the last stand of 1916 but if i've learned one thing about Dublin City Council it's not to trust them so until I see that they are working around the building in their plans I wont get too excited about this.
