The Morning Show on Newstalk 106 (a Dublin news and current affairs station) are doing a May Day feature tomorrow morning (Thursday, April 1st) from 10am. They will be discussing all aspects of the May Day protests planned throughout the day, and the traditional meaning of May Day, including the traditional May Day March on May 1st organised by the Dublin Council of Trade Unions (DCTU) , but which was cancelled this year because O'Connell Street was to have been closed for the now cancelled concert (maybe you might reconsider your decision now DCTU in light of the changed circumstances?). I encourage everyone to not only tune into Newstalk 106FM from 10am tomorrow morning, but to also participate in the debate by phoning in, texting and emailing. ... read full story / add a comment

A new political party launched recently in Dublin 15 has been set up as a result of its members “being used as cannon fodder” in the recent bin tax campaign according to its spokesperson.

The United Communities Party is standing two candidates in the Mulhuddart Electoral area in the forthcoming local elections. O'Connell Street traders have objected to the disruption that would be caused as the street would need to be closed for up to 7 days to erect and then dismantle the stage.
The Phoenix park is obviously out because all the noise might disrupt the dignitaries nin farmleigh. Looks like the "Day of Welcomes" is gonna be off limits to people both from within the current EU and from the accession countries (due to restrictions of the freedom of movement for eastern Europeans)

This decision will possibly have an impact on the level of political protests that will take place on May 1st ... read full story / add a comment

Not sure of the exact details but this morning at about 11am there were four cops at the Leeson st. squat. Seemingly they attempted to break down the front door, something completely out of the ordinary seeing as (a) it's a civil matter and the cops had already stated that they werent going to get involved and (b) its a listed building they they would have had to get permission to damage. Didnt see any people from the council but the cops were talking to two old conservative looking types. They all left pretty soon when people started showing up. Not sure of all the details as I had to leave very quickly.
Whatever the case it certainly doesnt bode well for the squatters legal rights being upheld. ... read full story / add a comment
