How ironic that the Irish Greyhound Derby final falls at the end of Gambling Awareness week,( this week). How many Irish people realise that very young school-going children are freely allowed to bet their pocket money without any legislative protection at Ireland’s Greyhound tracks. Yes, Irelands TOTE BETTING has no under age limit, leaving kids as young as 4 or 5 years old reaching over the counter at places like Shelbourne Park Greyhound Track to gamble their pocket money away. ... read full story / add a comment

For decades politician's, economic gurus of all shapes and sizes, have been extolling the virtues of the "free markets" and arguing that the state should stay out of the "market." “There is no alternative” was the unchallengeable dogma of these forces. Now have those say those same individuals demanding that the state intervene in the financial markets, the housing markets to save them for their own greed and reckless policies ... read full story / add a comment

The Minister has made a career out of stating the obvious but this time he has surpassed himself. While he accepts that the increased fuel bills are causing concern, the Minister then states that his colleague Mary Hanafin is monitoring the impact on pensioners. In fact there is no need to monitor anything – the price rises in both gas and electricity and in the basic cost of a bag of coal are breath-taking and will force many pensioners to go without adequate warmth this winter. A bag of coal is now eighteen euro. ... read full story / add a comment

The Oireachtas voted the Commission over €5 million to enable it do its job of informing citizens what the Lisbon referendum was about. Rarely can public money have been spent to such ill effect. The Commission spent €2.7 on media advertising. It paid An Post €1 million to deliver 2.2 million information handbooks to households. In the circumstances it was a democratic miracle that the majority of Irish voters rejected the proposal to amend the Irish Constitution. If the Commission had done the job it was statutorily required to do, the No-side majority would almost certainly have been much larger, for people would have learned of the constitutional revolution which Lisbon proposed, instead of being kept in ignorance of it. ... read full story / add a comment

éirígí chairperson Brian Leeson has warned Belfast City Council that any attempt to parade British soldiers through the streets of the city would not go unopposed. The Council is set to meet on Monday (September 1) to discuss proposals to have a homecoming ceremony for the Royal Irish Regiment when they return from the war in Afghanistan in November. The Royal Irish Regiment, and their predecessors in the Ulster Defence Regiment, were notorious for terrorising nationalist communities and working hand-in-hand with their colleagues in the unionist death squads. ... read full story / add a comment |
