AIMSI Statement regarding scan misdiagnoses

The Association for Improvements in the Maternity Services Ireland would like to offer its support to women affected by the ongoing scan misdiagnoses controversy. AIMSI offers support and information to women in their contact with the maternity services, and also assists women in registering complaints. Women can access AIMSI support services at: [email protected] OR [email protected].

Women may also seek support through dedicated helplines which have been established in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Drogheda , tel 1800-200-529 and in University College Hospital Galway, tel 1800 252 016. There is also a general HSE information line: 1850-241 850.

Since October 2008, AIMS Ireland has been corresponding with Prof Brendan Drumm, HSE CEO to highlight the issue of consent-related practices within Irish maternity hospitals. AIMSI has repeatedly called on Prof Drumm and the HSE to review service user consent policy in Irish maternity services and for the creation and implementation of National Guidelines for Clinical Practice in Maternity Care . A new survey carried out by AIMS Ireland (Association for Improvements in the Maternity Services, Ireland) found that 22% of women surveyed stated the care they received postnatally was “poor”, whilst a further 23% found the care to be only “average”. Furthermore, 23% of women rated the quality of information they received from their carer postpartum to be “poor”. AIMSI welcome the publication of the Independent Review of Maternity & Gynaecology Services in the Greater Dublin Area. In particular we welcome the recommendation for increased choice for women regarding models of care and the recognition that there is considerable evidence for the development of midwifery led units. We agree with the finding that the GDA is out of step in being able to offer a woman-centred service, providing choice and access to services .We share the belief that the GDA needs to place much more emphasis on community based maternity services, as 60% of women will experience a normal birth. ... read full story / add a comment
