Some of Italy's most senior police officers have been given jail sentences of up to five years for what the prosecutors called a "terrible" attack on demonstrators at the 2001 G8 meeting in Genoa and an attempted cover-up. It isn’t expected that any of the police will serve sentences because delays in bringing the prosecutions mean the offences are “ timed-out “ under statutes of limitations . But several of the most senior defendants were also given five-year disqualifications from public office . Victims of the police expressed delight at the sentences. ... read full story / add a comment

In these difficult times, many people have hoped for a sign from somewhere, showing that maybe, just maybe, everything will turn out okay.

The news from Methuen, a samll town in Essex County, Massachusetts has come, but in the surprising form of a picture of the face of an historical figure on an item of closely associated with unpaid labour.

The face of Karl Marx can certainly be made out, but what does it mean? ... read full story / add a comment

We have a ten-year window to act. As the megalomaniac G8 leaders meet in Germany, masked behind a barrier of fences and soldiers, intent on leading us further towards catastrophic and irreversible climate chaos, we must shout, scream and roar ‘no more’. Now is the time to take direct action and shut them down, them and their climate criminal industry friends! ... read full story / add a comment

This year 1billion Euro has been spent on all aspect of the G8 conference including a very significant security budget.

Today saw a historic joint venture into cyberspace by the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin who spent the day answering questions which had been put to him on the internet in a surprising joint project between the BBC and the Russian Government.

Amongst the questions put to Vlad, were the reason why he lifted the t-shirt of a 6 year old boy during a walkabout earlier this week & kissed his stomach. Putin replied ""He seemed very independent and serious... I wanted to cuddle him like a kitten and it came out in this gesture. He seemed so nice,".

Other human interest questions included one put by a 17 year old Russian girl who wondered at what age Mr Putin had lost his virginity. & of course some telly adicts had to ask about Korean missiles.
Vlad outlined his worries for Russia and his pride. The project comes amidst a concerted focus by the BBC on russian affairs in the lead up to this year's G8 conference which will be held in St. Petersburgh shortly.

"the 2005 World Summit is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for the world to come together and take action on grave global threats that require bold global solutions. It is also a chance to revitalize the United Nations itself. It is, in short, an opportunity for all humankind." - Secretary General Kofi Annan.
