We continue to kowtow to the present incumbent of the White House using all kinds of lame excuses for so doing. Enough! Let us end the empty charade of "friendship" with this man now and demand that our leaders present him with no more bowls of shamrock, an idea already tainted by the events surrounding 17 March 2003. ... read full story / add a comment

It has been long observed that people for some reason on their non-banking days readily absorb shite about Dangerous Places, Famous People, Sensible Saving Options, Holidays, Interesting facts, Sport results, Media, gardening and health as well looking ahead at “democratic evolution” and looking back at "how history was made" and reminding all of the old enemy "Authoritarianism". I am finally about to explain to all of you "believer or not" why the election of Ratzinger as "black pope" was so terribly important to us. ____________________________________ ... read full story / add a comment

a 43 year old mathematician and intellectual and ex-armed rebel is about to be sworn in as vice president of Bolivia. For a variety of reasons, a lot of attention is going his way, perhaps because outside of Latin American circles, no-one really knows much about him. Fine Gael has called on the Government to introduce a five point plan to cut A&E attendances by up to a 1/3. The plan which includes penalizing people who attend A&E units and also happen to be drunk, may put lives at risk. The proposals ignore the fact that the vast majority of those attending A&E units are actually in need medical aid and further that the majority of those in attendance never cause any disturbance to staff or fellow patients. One of the key planks of the policy calls for the doubling of A&E fees for those found to be under the influence of alcohol. The proposed fee of almost €100 will discourage people who may need medical aid from seeking it and will hit those on low incomes hardest, students in particular. ... read full story / add a comment

There were lots of elections in 2005, only a few of which got covered on indymedia ireland. But because the idea of democracy really took off so much, I wasn't able to write a "how did they vote or "not vote"" article as had in previous years been attempted. Just a quick recap - listed here. {My personal favourite was the Andorran general election.} ________________________________________________ ... read full story / add a comment
