I believe that pubs and publicans are finally starting to wake up and smell the coffee; and realise that people will no longer put up with the blatant overcharging that goes on. With sales down; and fewer people going out; and for less; and for shorter times, pubs have begun to bring down their prices. In addition, many pubs have now brought in live entertainment such as bands and ballads; and not before time! For example, my local, the Kilmardinny on Lorcan Avenue in Santry, Dublin, now has ballads and live music on a Wednesday and Saturday nights; and this is starting to draw the crowds back in; and I believe that it is a similar story in other pubs the length and breath of Ireland! ... read full story / add a comment

Photos of todays parade will be posted in the coming days. The parade itself was the largest IRSM event in Derry in years. The three bands deserve great credit, the Belfast RS Matyrs, Strabane/Derry RSM Memorial Flute band and the Kevin Lynch Memorial Flute Band were all excellent, as was the Colour Party. The weather was superb, too hot for some, and the turnout surpassed expectations. A big thank you to all who turned out to make this event special and onward to next year which marks the twenty fifth anniversary of the hungerstrikes. ... read full story / add a comment

Dr. Mustafa Barghouti, the leader of the Palestinian National Initiative (Al Mubadara), a democratic secular organisation working for peaceful civil-resistance to the Israeli occupation and for the democratisation of Palestinian institutions, has called for the withdrawal of settlers from Gaza to be the first step in the creation of an independent state of Palestine in Gaza, West Bank and East Jerusalem and the settlement of all outstanding issues including the right to return. Dr. Barghouti was the main candidate of the left/secular/democratic forces in the Presidential elections of 2005 when he scored a creditable 20% against the current President Mahmoud Abbas of Fatah. It has been long observed that people for some reason on their non-banking days readily absorb shite about Dangerous Places, Famous People, Sensible Saving Options, Holidays, Interesting facts, Sport results, Media, gardening and health as well looking ahead at “upcoming issues”. Today is august, 8th month 2005. It is also Tisha B’Av or the 9th of Av, year of Moses 5765. It is also the 9th day of Rajab, 1426 since the Hegira. Today is historic because it sees the deadline for unilateral withdrawl from the Gaza strip of some 8000 plus living Israeli citizens and many of their dead. Today may also be historic as under extreme pressure from the USA the Iraqi government are supposed to present a draft constitution. ... read full story / add a comment

In a monstrous abuse of the powers of Government and the courts, the Rossport 5 remain in Jail. The five men from Mayo are now in their sixth week in jail, on foot of an injunction the High Court accorded to Shell ordering them not to obstruct Shell’s work on the pipeline across their lands. This work on the pipeline, it has been established, was and is illegal because Shell did not and does not have consents they needed from Minister Dempsey to proceed. ... read full story / add a comment |
