When Irish Ferries launched their new €50million vessel in Dublin Port on Tuesday 29th January, 400 guests from the tourism, freight and shipping sectors attended the naming ceremony. How many of them, I wonder, took a moment as they quaffed their champagne and nibbled on their canapés to ponder on the news revealed by International Transport Workers Federation inspector, Ken Fleming, that the workers who would be manning the ferry will be paid as little as €4 per hour?

In the wake of the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences Bill) 2006; as amended in 2007,
two expert committees were set up to look at :- The issue of consent , to which interest groups
were invited to make submission; and in the wake of that a committee was set up under the
chairmanship of Mary O Rourke (Senator) to look at amending the Constitution.

Latest news on the issue of Protection is that the State may postpone the Referendum
now until 2009, because they do not (nor do the opposition) want the two Referenda
to coincide and create confusion for the voter. The Government had discussed holding
a referendum on Protection on the same day as the Lisbon Treaty Vote. ... read full story / add a comment

This is the last week of the annual Turner Exhibit in the National Gallery's Print Room.
The blurb on the boards describes the provenance of the bequest and the agreement
between the estate of the collector and the Scottish and Irish galleries.
We only exhibit the Turner's in their climate control cases during the month of
January, this is largely because they are drawings and washes of landscapes
and are fragile.

The light is weakest at this time of year in Dublin and conducive to a visit. ... read full story / add a comment

national / anti-capitalism Tuesday January 22, 2008 - 21:40 by Mark A. Nolan   image 1 image
The healthcare system, upon which people in Ireland depend, is an apartheid system. Simply put, some lives are worth more than others. Rare attempts at reform have been stymied by historic, chronic underspending and vested interests. This legacy has forced the vast majority of working people to take out private health insurance and has laid the foundations for a neo-liberal push towards an American-style system of private medicine. ... read full story / add a comment

Many readers will ask- what on Earth is this person on about??

Of course the Government wants to stop violence!!!!!!!!

Does it really??

No, that is propaganda.

Violent men and women are rewarded by the system in secret courts not open to the public.

Secret courts are supposed to keep the childs identity secret.!!

That is not what is being kept secret at all.

Rather- it is the corruption of the state agents, lawyers, judges etc that is kept hidden. ... read full story / add a comment

I'm sitting here in a wee village with row upon row of empty houses in sight. The rumour is less than 10% have sold. They're building even more. If I was them buildermen I'd give up and go home or take them diggers and go digging for gold in the mountains. The shit is hitting the fans BIGTIME. They'll try to paper over the cracks until after the EU constitution referendum but I don't think they'll succeed.

This is personal with me! Without going into detail, I personally know people who are very ill, and who could die if they don't get check-up, examinations, tests and treatment soon. Of course, if they have money, they will get seen to straightaway. It's not right! That's why it's good to see that the Dublin Council of Trade Unions (DCTU) have launched a Campaign Against The Health Cuts. Full details in the main article below. ... read full story / add a comment

Institutionalised religion is concerned in retaining control: the reality of power is more important than the prospect of exploring multiple realities. Anything new or different raises the alarm bells.

This is a short opinion and analysis based in an article written in December 2006
regarding the Press laws introduced by the then Minister for Justice, Michael Mc Dowell.
He published a Bill entitled 'The Privacy and Defamation Bill 2006'.

http://www.indymedia.ie/article/78780

The Bill did not get legislated for in the form introduced and the 'Defamation 'section was 'shelved'.
Last night at the Launch of the Press Council of Ireland, current Justice Minister , Brian Leninhan TD
threatened the re-introduction of the defamation section , which had garnered international criticism. ... read full story / add a comment

"Threads" a BBC docudrama from 1984 focuses on the impact of a full blown nuclear war on the residents of Shefield in the 1980's.
The U.S. and Russia come to blows after a military coup in Iran prompts a Soviet military incursion which provokes an American military response.
The conflict escalates into a full-blown nuclear war which decimates humanity and population of Britain.
Shefield recieves a direct hit which transforms the city into a wasteland. ... read full story / add a comment
